Van Persie: The injury has been quite bad

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie believes that he still has a chance to play a part in the Gunners Premier League title bid as he bids to regain fitness before the end of the season. The Dutchman has been sidelined since November when he was stretchered off in an international friendly against Italy following a nasty collision with Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini and was later diagnosed with serious ankle ligament damage.

Despite an initial prognosis which saw him ruled out for just six weeks, and having tried a controversial healing process involving placenta massages, van Persie eventually accepted that he required surgery. The Gunners have maintained their remarkable scoring record this season even with their star man sidelined, but in recent weeks have seen Eduardo da Silva and Andrey Arshavin struggle to make an impact against more physical opponents.

Arsene Wenger had been expected to buy during the January transfer window, but with Nicklas Bendtner recovering from injury and the side progressing into the New Year in a decent run of form, the French coach opted not to spend.

Speaking about his recovery and his ambitions for the next few months, van Perise revealed to The Sun:

"At this point I can say that my recovery is right on schedule.

"The injury has been quite bad.

"I would however like to be part of the team's campaign in the later stages of the league, or if we are still there, in the Champions League."

Van Persie faces a race against time if he is to be included in Bert van Marwijk’s Holland World Cup squad at the end of the season. However, with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Klaas Jan Huntelaar struggling for form he still retains a strong chance no matter how many games he plays for Arsenal this term.

Robin Van Persie Set To Boost Arsenal With March Return

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is set to return to action far sooner than expected, and could be ready for first team action by mid-March, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The 26-year-old has been sidelined since rupturing ankle ligaments in an international friendly for Holland against Italy back in November.

However, according to the report the Dutch international is now walking freely and was back in training with the Gunners last week.

The lethal finisher had been expected to miss the majority of the season, putting him at risk of also being ruled out of this summer’s World Cup as well.

However, van Persie is now expected to be ready to return by mid-March, almost a month sooner than originally anticipated.

The paper claims that while manager Arsene Wenger is still counselling caution and not expecting the striker to play until April, the Holland national team’s doctors anticipate he could return in as little as seven weeks.

Should the news prove correct it is likely to prove a huge boost for the Gunners, with Van Persie available to play a part in the campaign's crucial run-in.

The former Feyenoord forward bagged eight goals before injury, although despite his absence the north Londoners remain the Premier League’s top-scorers with 59 goals from 23 games.

Wenger still working on Van Persie compensation claim

The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is still trying to persue the legal possibilities of getting compensation from the Dutch FA after his main striker Robin Van Persie suffered a devastating ankle injury while playing in a friendly match against Italy.

But the Frenchman admitted that they were far from presenting a case as yet, saying that they were still in “enquiry”.

“There is nothing there, we are a little bit in no-man’s land at the moment,” said Wenger.

“Why? Because for the international friendlies it is very difficult to get anywhere.

“We are still in enquiry.”

The Dutch FA have rubbished Arsenal claims, and said that there was no chance of them getting any compensation.

Dutch FA president Henk Kesler previously said that Arsenal should stop “shouting their mouths off,” and read the rules, which state that the domestic clubs are responsible for insuring the players on international duty.

“Before Arsenal were shouting their mouths off in public, they should have studied the FIFA rules.” said Kesler.

“If you read the rules, then you know that players are always insured by their clubs. They are also insured by the club when they are on their travels with the national team. Let Arsenal come to us with their legal claim and we will fight it.”

If Arsenal HAVE been studying the rule books but still haven’t found a basis for a compensation claim in the last two weeks, then it would seem that Kesler is right.

Robin van Persie will return good as new, says Arsene Wenger
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists Robin van Persie will make a complete recovery from major ankle surgery and could play again this season.

Van Persie was injured while on international duty for Holland last month, damaging ligaments in his right ankle.

The 26-year-old was told he is likely to miss the rest of the domestic campaign but should recover in time for the World Cup in June.

However, Wenger has revealed the latest prognosis from the striker’s surgeon is more positive.

‘When you have such a big surgery, the opinion of the surgeon is important,’ said the Frenchman.

‘Will he be the player he was before? We had a clear answer: “yes”.’

The Arsenal boss also believes that if the recovery goes well, Van Persie could be back in April. ‘Hopefully, we’ll have a good surprise,’ he added.

But Wenger has not ruled out adding more firepower to his squad in January, even if the player was ineligible to play in this season’s Champions League. ‘We have an interested eye on the transfer market, and if the right player turns up then we will do it,’ he said. ‘Sometimes there is a bargain you can’t turn down.’

The Gunners have been boosted by news captain Cesc Fabregas could return for Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa at the Emirates.

The Spain midfielder, who missed the win over Hull with a hamstring injury, said: ‘I will be working as hard as I can over the Christmas period to be back for the game with Villa.’

Robin van Persie will make 'complete recovery'

The surgeon who operated on Robin van Persie's ankle has promised the Arsenal forward that he will make a full recovery from the damaged ankle ligaments that effectively ended his season.

Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, revealed today that the operation had been a success and that the Holland international could target May for his comeback. The Frenchman added that he had yet to relay the good news to his player.

"When you have such a big surgery, the opinion of the surgeon is important," Wenger said. "Will he be the player he was before? We had a clear answer, 'yes'."

Van Persie damaged his ankle while playing for his country in a friendly international against Italy last month. "At the moment, he can't do anything," Wenger said. "He's just sitting at home and waiting to work again."

The Frenchman added that Van Persie has an outside chance of being fit by April. "It's virtually the rest of the season," he said. "I haven't said that to Robin. Hopefully, we'll have a good surprise."

Dutch FA scoff at Arsenal compo claims for Van Persie

The Dutch FA are ready to fight Arsenal all the way over their compensation demands for the injury suffered by Robin van Persie.

Arsenal's lawyers are confident that they can claim for compensation for the cost to the club of the ankle injury, which will keep Van Persie out for five months.

But Dutch FA president Henk Kesler, a lawyer, claims that the club will already have insurance to cover the cost of his wages under FIFA rules.

"Before Arsenal were shouting their mouths off in public, they should have studied the FIFA rules," said Kesler.

"If you read the rules, then you know that players are always insured by their clubs. They are also insured by the club when they are on their travels with the national team. Let Arsenal come to us with their legal claim and we will fight it."

Ruud Gullit: Robin Van Persie Can Return And Have A Great World Cup

Injured Gunner should not give up on World Cup dream...

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has tipped Arsenal striker Robin van Persie to return from injury and enjoy a great World Cup in South Africa next summer.

The Gunner is currently recovering from surgery after undergoing an operation to repair ankle ligaments damaged whilst playing in a friendly international against Italy last month.

Although the 26-year-old is not expected to return to action for another five months, Gullit believes Van Persie can make it to South Africa and likened his situation to that of Marco van Basten, who returned from injury to inspire Holland to victory in the 1988 European Championships.

“Robin's a very important player for us,” Gullit told The Mail on Sunday.

“Look at Arsenal struggling without him. But I'm thinking about what happened with Van Basten. He was injured throughout the season in 1988, but then at the end of the season he was fit again and the rest is history.”

“He was great in the 1988 tournament. I think he only played the last game of the season that year so even if Robin were only back in April it would be possible to have a great World Cup.”

Friday’s World Cup draw saw the Netherlands drawn in Group E where they will face Japan, Cameroon and Denmark in the group stages of the tournament.

Wenger - RVP surgery went well

Arsenal boss receives update on injured striker

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has started on the long road to recovery after undergoing surgery on his ankle ligament injury.

The Holland forward is facing at least the next four months on the sidelines, with real doubts over whether he will feature again this term.

Van Persie suffered the injury while on international duty during a friendly with Italy and his absence is a major setback for the Gunners.

Manager Arsene Wenger has received an update on his sidelined striker and revealed that the operation to repair Van Persie's damaged ligaments was a complete success.

He told the club's official website: "I have not talked to Robin yet but there again the news I got from the surgery was it went very, very well.

"There was a lot of disturbance on our side recently (about his injury) but the surgery went well."

Arsene Wenger Angry With Dutch FA Over Robin Van Persie Injury

Gunners boss brands Dutch authorities 'a joke' after misdiagnosis

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has voiced his anger with the Dutch FA after it was revealed that striker Robin van Persie’s ankle injury is much worse than first thought.

The Gunner picked up the injury in an international friendly with Italy, and it was originally feared he would miss six weeks. However, further tests have now revealed the forward it set to sit out the next five months with Van Persie due to undergo surgery in Amsterdam next week.

Speaking about the situation, Wenger insisted the Dutch FA had made mistakes and claimed they must show more respect to clubs.

"I think the Dutch FA minored the injury. We have just found out that it is much worse than what they had first told us,” he told the News of the World.

"If a player gets injured with his country he should be sent back to his club straight away to be checked out by their doctors - not by those of the national team.

"Countries just take your player away, for a friendly, give him back and say 'there you go'. This doesn't happen in any other sport. It's a joke and there must be more respect for us. "

The injury is a massive blow for Arsenal, as Van Persie had been in fine form of late for the Gunners scoring seven times in the Premier League.

The Dutch international also revealed his displeasure at the news and claimed he should have had surgery already.

"If I had known at the time what I know now, I would have been operated on immediately,” said the striker.

“We have all been steered in the wrong direction.”

Van Persie - I felt nobody could stop me

Robin Van Persie will be out for longer than expected.

After a new scan and study in hospital, it was discovered that three of the four ligaments in his right ankle were ruptured in the friendly international game between Holland and Italy.

The Arsenal striker had his ankle put in plaster yesterday [Friday] and will be operated on by one of the world’s most renowned ankle specialists very soon. Van Persie is expected to be out for another four months.

During his time with the Dutch national team, and shortly after the tackle by Giorgio Chiellini in Pescara, doctors diagnosed that Van Persie had only a tear in one of the ligaments in his right ankle. He would be out for six weeks.

The healing of that kind of injury could be speeded up, according to his Dutch team-mate Orlando Engelaar and Van Persie’s former team mate at PSV Eindhoven, Danko Lazovic, if he would use the skills of Mariana Kovacevic.

The player could not know the damage in his right ankle was more severe. “If I had known at the time what I know now, I would have been operated [on] immediately,’’ Van Persie says in his home in Rotterdam, where he sits with his leg up and his ankle in plaster. “We have all been steered in the wrong direction.’’

However the Dutch international does not regret his visit to Kovacevic.

He says: “In the area of torn muscles and partly torn ligaments she has treated players in the majority of cases with success. A number of Liverpool and Chelsea players have all benefited from her treatments. They were all back on the pitch in a very short time.

“As I was enjoying a fantastic period with Arsenal and the first official diagnosis from the doctors was that I would be out for six weeks, I wanted to bring that period back to three or four weeks.

“But the ligaments in my ankle were completely ruptured. That’s why the treatment in Serbia, we know now, never had the chance to be successful from the start.

“I have never wanted to go for alternative medical help before. Normally I am too cool for that kind of thing.

“But because I wanted to grab every opportunity to get fit again and to be back on the pitch with Arsenal, I decided to have a go. If it does not help me, it won’t harm me either. That was my motto.

“I had the treatment methods checked intensively before I went out there. I demanded to know if there was any way it could do any damage. It couldn’t. Which is why I went.

“A lot has been said and written about it. But the method of treatment in Serbia is not a bizarre thing. I did not have anything injected in my body. The treatment was solely on the surface.’’

Van Persie says he did underestimate the impact of his visit to Serbia. “People say I should have kept it quiet. But because I always want to be honest and I felt as if I had nothing to hide, I wanted to be open about it.

“I was in continuous contact with the medical staff at Arsenal, with whom I have an excellent relationship. In fact, I admire our medical people at the club for giving me the chance to work on a really fast return into the team. A lot of other people made comments without having any knowledge of the treatment methods in Serbia.’’

Van Persie says he understands the curiosity after the injury moment in the friendly against Italy. He is the star striker of the Netherlands and one of the main attackers at Arsenal.

“But I was surprised by the hype and some of the bizarre comments. All those people forget I only had one goal with all this: I wanted to get back in the team at Arsenal as quick as possible.’’

Van Persie now knows he needs to be patient.

“It is so frustrating to be out for months. I was having a super season with the team. I had never felt as strong and powerful as this year. Apart from, I think, two matches, I either scored or made goals in all the games we played this season.

“I was getting so strong, that I felt nobody could stop me anymore. That is the greatest feeling you can have as a player.

“It is such a pity that great run has been stopped for the time being by one kick in a friendly international match. It is a real shame for me, for the team and for the fans of Arsenal.’’

Van Persie hopes he can still play a major role in Arsenal’s season. The team, he feels, deserve a trophy. “I want to wish them luck against Chelsea this weekend. I hope the boys keep believing in themselves. I am absolutely convinced they will keep improving and keep the good form of the last few months going.’’

Robin says he feels supported by the positive reactions he has received since damaging his ankle.

“In Serbia complete strangers came up to me to wish me well. In London, the same thing. In Amsterdam, at the AMC hospital, everyone told me I had been so unlucky. People tell me they want to enjoy watching me play again soon for Arsenal. That has really lifted my spirit in a difficult time.’’

The article is translated from an interview in Saturday's AD Sportwereld.

Serious setback for Robin van Persie

Arsenal have confirmed that Robin van Persie will be sidelined for a further four months after tests revealed he ruptured three of the four ligaments in his right ankle during a friendly between Netherlands and Italy.

Van Persie suffered the injury following a challenge from Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini earlier in the month and the club initially announced an encouraging diagnosis of a six-week recovery period due to a tear in one of his ligaments.

However, further examinations have revealed much more extensive damage and Van Persie had his ankle put in plaster on Friday. He will now undergo surgery on the problem and Arsenal anticipate that he will be unavailable for "four months".

"It is so frustrating to be out for months," Van Persie told AD Sportwereld. "I was having a super season with the team. I had never felt as strong and powerful as this year. Apart from, I think, two matches, I either scored or made goals in all the games we played this season.

"I was getting so strong, that I felt nobody could stop me anymore. That is the greatest feeling you can have as a player. It is such a pity that great run has been stopped for the time being by one kick in a friendly international match. It is a real shame for me, for the team and for the fans of Arsenal."

ROBIN VAN PERSIE AND FRANK LAMPARD'S HEALER SHUT DOWN

THE backstreet clinic where injured football stars have been treated with placentas is to be shut down.

Arsenal ace Robin Van Persie, 26, and Chelsea hero Frank Lampard, 31, right, have both been to the Serbian clinic.

But healer Marijana Kovacevic, 42, has not registered it with medical or business authorities, according to a local newspaper. And she has never paid taxes.

Critics claim her treatments with horse placenta can only mask injuries short-term.

One doctor said: “The concern is that they think they are healed and go back to playing and cause even more damage.”

Van Persie, who had horse placenta massaged into his injured ankle, said: “It’s good, I am happy. The woman is a miracle.”

Other footballers said to have visited the clinic include Liverpool stars Yossi Benayoun, 29, Glen Johnson, 25, and Albert Riera, 27. Locals pay just £50 but football stars have been charged £5,000.

Specialist Dr Moma Jakovljevic, who works in Serbia’s capital Belgrade, said: “If she used human placenta it would be illegal but using animal placenta just makes us a laughing stock. It can’t have any benefit at all.”

But Israeli midfielder Benayoun said: “It meant I was able to play again and help the team at an important time within a fortnight.

“I never envisaged being on the pitch again so soon, and it shows what can be done with this treatment.”

Arsenal is ready for the next round, they finished at the top of the table!!

ARSENE WENGER got it right again - a kick up the Arse was just what the Gunners needed.

Job done... but now the real business begins.

Denilson's 35-yard strike, on his 100th appearance for the club, sealed victory.

And Arsenal did not just claim their place in the Champions League last 16, they also secured top spot in Group H.

The manner the Gunners went about it also gave them the perfect tonic ahead of Sunday's huge Premier League clash with Chelsea on home turf.

Wenger - Van Persie free to choose treatment

Arsène Wenger says he is not a fan of the novel treatment Robin Van Persie is undergoing in Serbia but is happy for the striker to receive it.

The Dutchman suffered ankle ligament damage in an international friendly against Italy on Saturday and has been given a course of treatment that involves placenta fluid being dripped onto his injured ankle.

After the initial scare that Van Persie could be out for the remainder of the season, Wenger was relieved to hear it would only be a six-week layoff and despite his scepticism he has no objections to the treatment.

"I am not a fan," said the Arsenal manager, "but also I am not a doctor.

"I have seen a few bizarre treatments. I could tell you a few stories about the treatments; I have enough to write a book on them.

"But I respect the individual freedom of everybody to be treated how they want to be treated.

"Since I have been in sport, when I have any guy who is injured, their first reflex is to go to their own country to be treated.

"Robin is exactly the same - most of the time he is treated first in Holland, because that is where he feels the most comfortable.

"They had told me he could be out for the rest of the season. But it did not need surgery; the positive news we had is that he will be out for four to six weeks. We count six because we are a bit pessimistic."

Chiellini not to blame for Van Persie injury'

Arsène Wenger does not blame Giorgio Chiellini for the injury which has sidelined Robin Van Persie for six weeks.

The Dutch forward damaged ankle ligaments after landing badly following a challenge by the Italian defender in last weekend's international friendly in Pescara.

Van Persie was shaping to shoot when Chiellini executed a well-timed tackle inside the penalty area and Wenger refused to point the finger at the Juventus man when the topic cropped up at his pre-match press conference.

"It did not look like a violent tackle to me," said Wenger. "It was an accidental ankle injury."

Arsene Wenger plays down Robin van Persie blow

Arsene Wenger is confident that Arsenal will cope with the enforced absence of Robin van Persie and has spoken of his "relief" that the striker was not sidelined for considerably longer than six weeks.

Van Persie partially ruptured an ankle ligament during a friendly against Italy on Saturday and initial reports suggested he could be absent for up to three months, and potentially the remainder of the Premier League campaign.

Such a scenario would have cast real doubt on Arsenal's hopes for the season but the club have since learned that Van Persie will miss between four to six weeks, a prognosis that Wenger believes the club can cope with adequately.

The Frenchman was also pleased to hear that left-back Kieran Gibbs only suffered bruising and not a fractured metatarsal when limping off during the Under-21 game between England and Lithuania on Tuesday night.

"We knew that when Robin came out with this injury, that he would be out for a long time," Wenger told the club's official website. "But frankly I feared it would be more because the first news was very, very bad. So it was a relief that he would be out for six weeks.

"Of course it is a disappointment and something we did not want but I feel we have enough strength to compensate for his absence for a while. It will also allow him to be fresh for when he comes back.

Van Persie desperate for quick recovery

Robin van Persie intends to do all he can to get back into action for Arsenal as soon as possible - and will travel to Serbia for radical medical treatment that involves massage using fluid from a placenta.

The Holland forward - who has scored eight goals in 15 games in all competitions this season and emerged as one of the Gunners' key figures - has been ruled out for at least six weeks with partially-torn ankle ligaments following a heavy challenge from Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Saturday's friendly in Pescara.

Van Persie will return to London to continue his rehabilitation but is ready to go a step further to try to help the healing process, telling Dutch television programme Studio Voetbal: "I will fly to the Balkans to meet with a female doctor who helped (PSV Eindhoven midfielder) Danko Lazovic. She is vague about her methods but I know she massages you using fluid from a placenta."

He added: "I am going to try. It cannot hurt and, if it helps, it helps.

"I have been in contact with Arsenal physiotherapists and they have let me do it."

Van Persie accepted his injury could have been much worse.

The Dutchman added: "A scan showed that my ankle ligament was almost completely torn off where Chiellini caught me but it was not intentional.

"I was lucky, it could be worse."

Robin van Persie only out for six weeks with ankle injury

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is confident the ankle injury he suffered against Italy on the weekend isn't as bad as first thought.

Despite initial reports suggesting he could be out for most of the season, the Dutchman says he should be back by January at the latest.

"The prognosis is that I will be out for four to six weeks," van Persie told the Dutch television station NOS.

Van Persie suffered the injury after just ten minutes of Holland's international friendly with Italy following a tackle from Azzurri stopper Giorgio Chiellini.

The forward has scored eight goals in his last 11 matches for the Gunners, who currently sit second on the Barclays Premier League table.

The tricky attacker faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines...

Premier League powerhouse Arsenal have received some disturbing news on the injury front in the aftermath of Saturday's international friendly between Italy and Netherlands.

Highly rated forward Robin van Persie was part of the starting XI for the Dutch, but the in-form attacker was forced to leave the pitch after only fourteen minutes of play due to injury.

The former Feyenoord star went to the ground after a duel with Italian centre back Giorgio Chiellini and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

Holland coach Bert van Marwijk told Dutch reporters after the match that it doesn't look good for Van Persie, as the forward has probably torn his ankle ligaments.

Van Persie will undergo further examination on Sunday to clarify the seriousness of the ankle injury, but the Arsenal star is expected to be out of action for about two months.

Arsenal star: Don't call me a killer

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has played down suggestions that he is a true out-and-out striker like Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Liverpool's Fernando Torres but instead hinted that his style is a combination of both the Ivorian and Spaniard’s game.

The Dutch international has spearheaded Arsene Wenger’s offensive 4-3-3 formation with aplomb this term netting seven goals and providing seven assists as the Gunners break long-standing goal scoring records.

Speaking to media while on international duty with Holland, Van Persie stated:

"I don’t see myself as a true out-and-out striker. Guys like Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba they are real killers. I feel I play between a target striker and a supporting striker. I am a combination of both.

“In the league I have contributed seven assists and I am just as proud of these as the seven goals I have scored. I find it crucial to be effective in both spheres for the team.

“I am still developing in that position but I know I can play there if the coach needs me.”

RvP - I rejected dark side

Arsenal striker refused to let dark side of life take him.

Arsenal hot-shot Robin van Persie has revealed he rejected the 'dark side' of life as a teenager to become the player he is today.

The Dutchman is currently setting the Premier League on fire, notching seven goals as the Gunners sit second in the top-flight.

But van Persie believes it could have all been different if he had succumbed to the darker temptations available as a young man in Holland.

He now uses a photograph of an under-14s football team for whom he played as a reminder of the right choices he made.

Van Persie told the News of the World: "My life could easily have been completely different.

"I came from a very rough neighbourhood in Rotterdam where there were so many cultures all mixed together.

"I was one of the only white Dutch guys there - my friends were from Africa, Surinam, Morocco, Turkey.

"And, of course, there were distractions. Like when I was younger and was in a shop buying candy - I would pay for one but then take another one.

Crossroads
"I did that sort of thing here and there. We were kids and we all did it. But when I got to 14, I found myself at a crossroads in my life.

"I could have easily gone astray. I saw people doing stupid things - my team-mates, my colleagues, my friends.

"For instance, my friends tried to make me have a drink, have a cigarette and stuff - well, you know, it was Holland.

"But I was always more interested in football, that was what I wanted to do more than anything. So I never did those things.

"I never went to that dark side. It would have been easy to have done it - half the team was doing it, most of my friends were doing it. But I did not.

"I just felt it was not right to smoke, to drink, when you are just 14. Everyone told me to try it but I always said 'no'.

"And the other day I looked at a picture of my under-14s football team and I looked at the ones who were doing those things and also at the ones who weren't.

"And do you know what? The ones who did it - none of them made it!"

Fully focused
Van Persie is now fully focused on helping the Gunners win the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

He added: "So far I have only won two trophies at Arsenal - the FA Cup and the Community Shield. That's not enough and I would hate to finish my career having won only those here.

"I desperately want to win the Premier League and the Champions League with Arsenal and I truly believe that's possible.

"But... I get the chance to play with the likes of Fabregas, Arshavin, Eduardo, Walcott, Nasri and Rosicky - great players who play a beautiful game.

"Then I watch some teams on TV and think: 'Oh my God, this is so ugly!'

"That helps me realise how special it is to be at a club like this. I want to win it all with Arsenal."

PREMIER LEAGUE: Arsenal 4-1 Wolverhampton

I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Wolverhampton, England (Sports Network) - Two first-half own goals put Wolverhampton well on its way to a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal on Saturday at Molineux Stadium.

The home side started well but things started to go down hill very quickly as a corner kick was inadvertently redirected into his own net by Ronald Zubar, while seven minutes later, Eduardo's chip struck the head of defender Jody Craddock and found its way into the upper right corner.

Cesc Fabregas added a third goal right before halftime, while the second half saw Andrei Arshavin score Arsenal's fourth goal before Craddock pulled one back a few minutes from time.

With the result, Arsenal moves into second place on goal difference ahead of Manchester United, while the Gunners are just two points back of leaders Chelsea.

Wolverhampton was the better of the two sides through the opening 20 minutes and they could have taken the lead after 10 minutes when Sylvan Ebanks-Blake got open at the back post but headed a corner kick wide.

Arsenal was struggling to really test goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, but a bit of good fortune allowed the visitors to take the lead.

Fabregas swung a corner kick towards the top of the six-yard box, and the ball struck the leg of Zubar and caromed into the back of the net as he was under pressure from Eduardo.

The Croatian was involved again in the 35th minute when Aaron Ramsey burst through midfield and laid a ball off to Eduardo, whose attempted chip deflected off the head of Craddock and found its way into the upper corner of the net.

The visitors then put together a good build up and scored a goal themselves right before halftime as Bacary Sagna's right-wing cross was brought down by Robin van Persie and laid off to Fabregas, who beat Hennessey at his near post.

Hennessey then made a good save on Arshavin midway through the second half, but the ensuing corner kick allowed the Russian to claim his fourth goal of the campaign before Craddock spoiled the clean sheet in the 89th minute.

The Dutch international found the net twice in Arsenal's 3-0 victory over local rivals Tottenham at the end of October, having already scored against Blackburn, Birmingham and West Ham.

This is the second time the 26-year-old has been named as the top flight's elite performer, having scooped the prize previously in November 2005.

Van Persie's Arsenal side take on newly-promoted Wolves on Saturday, with the Dutchman currently fifth in the league scoring chart with seven goals so far, and he has prospered as the spearhead of Wenger's new attacking formation.

Team-mate Cesc Fabregas has already been handed the accolade of PFA Fan's Player of the Month award in what was a fantastic October for the Gunners.

Robin in dutch selection

ZEIST, Netherlands (Reuters) - Robin van Persie could be deployed as a central striker for the Netherlands in friendlies against Italy and Paraguay later this month, coach Bert van Marwijk said on Friday.

Van Persie has played centrally at the tip of the front three for Arsenal this season but performed mainly as an attacking midfielder on the right flank for the Dutch during the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

"We have discussed it extensively among the technical staff but it also is important that the players around him function well," Van Marwijk told a news conference after announcing a 23-men squad for the matches against Italy in Pescara on November 14 and Paraguay in Heerenveen four days later.

"In my opinion he is not an old fashioned centre forward."

Dirk Kuyt was the first choice as central striker during the 2010 qualifiers but at Liverpool he is used predominantly on the right wing, while Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is not a first choice for new club AC Milan and has yet to score after becoming surplus to requirements at Real Madrid in the close season.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax Amsterdam), Michel Vorm (Utrecht), Piet Velthuizen (Vitesse Arnhem)

Defenders: John Heitinga (Everton), Joris Mathijsen (SV Hamburg), Edson Braafheid (Bayern Munich), Gregory van der Wiel (Ajax Amsterdam), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Khalid Boulahrouz (VFB Stuttgart)

Midfielders: Nigel de Jong (Manchester City), Demy de Zeeuw (Ajax Amsterdam), Stijn Schaars (AZ Alkmaar), Ibrahim Afellay (PSV Eindhoven), Wesley Sneijder (Internazionale), Rafael van der Vaart (Real Madrid), Orlando Engelaar (PSV Eindhoven), Mark van Bommel (Bayern Munich)

Forwards: Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Klaas Jan Huntelaar (AC Milan), Eljero Elia (SV Hamburg), Ryan Babel (Liverpool), Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich)

Wenger: Van Persie is the best striker in the League

Arsene Wenger has claimed Robin Van Persie is the deadliest striker in the Premier League and that he would not swap him for anyone else in world football.

Van Persie has hit eight goals this season and Arsenal boss Wenger maintains that his strikeforce is even better now than the forward line-up from the Invincibles season of 2003-04.

"For me Robin is the best striker in the league at the moment, because he is a great link player, and that's what I like first," Wenger told the Daily Mirror. "We play a collective game so it's very important that the target man in our team links well with our other players.

"I wouldn't swap him for anyone. He knows how we play, we play together for four or five years now with all the team and everybody knows the movement of each other.

"He has adapted to our style and is suited to our style, like Drogba is suited to the Chelsea style. I have a huge respect for Drogba, he is a top class player, he is a fighter, he scores in the big games. In every single big game he scores. I know what kind of player he is."

Wenger also believes his wealth of options in attack makes his current attack even deadlier than the 2003-04 season when Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Jose Antonio Reyes and Freddie Ljungberg fired the Gunners to the title.

Wenger said: "There is depth, we have options. We have never had so many creative players. When you think against AZ Alkmaar, Rosicky came on, Eduardo came on. But you have to remember that Walcott was not there, Vela was not there, Bendtner was not there. You have plenty of offensive options available.

"Let's say they (the Invincibles) have done it, we have it all to do. We have a good potential, I believe we have a fantastic technical level, we have a good spirit in the team and it is all good ingredients.

"But let's show that we can do it. At the moment we are behind Chelsea and we should be in front of all of them already. We dropped two points at West Ham we could have taken and we lost at Man United and I still wonder how today."

Meanwhile, Wenger has revealed Fran Merida has agreed a new deal at the club, but has yet to sign it.

The 19-year-old's current contract expires next summer and Arsenal are keen to tie him down to a new long-term contract. However, Wenger admits other clubs have been undermining their attempts to agree a new contract with Merida and the Frenchman is not happy with the way Atletico Madrid have let their interest be known.

"He has an offer which he has agreed, but has not signed yet," said Wenger. "Some clubs are doing their work behind our back to destabilise him. We cannot stop that, but it is a fact."

Robin van Persie Relishing Key Games For Arsenal

Dutch striker enjoying pressure of pivotal encounters…

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is excited rather than daunted by the number of crucial games the Gunners face in the next few weeks.

The Netherlands international believes that Arsene Wenger's men are about to enter a key phase of the season. The striker is energised by the prospect, and can't wait for the next game to come around.

"It is a very crucial time for us now," he said, according to Press Association Sport.

"Against Wolves, it is a must-win game for us, given that Chelsea and Man United are playing each other.

"After the (international) break we have Sunderland away and then Chelsea, so it will be a tough month, but I am looking forward to it."

Van Persie is also confident that the Gunners can maintain their impressive form. Morale is high at the Emirates, and he feels that teams will have to work hard to overcome a team who are enjoying working together.

"We are looking sharp at the moment," he added.

"Everyone wants to play together and as long as we are enjoying ourselves together we can continue like this.

"We have one game in hand and are two points off Chelsea so if they lose points we will be in a good position.

"One of the top two will lose points this weekend, so if we want to challenge for the title we have to win."

CL: Arsenal 4-1 Az Alkmaar

I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Now expect some of those wide-eyed, fresh-faced youngsters to be unleashed in the final two matches of the group stages - Arsenal's Champions League cubs.

Group H for this season should stand for Hopeless.

Arsenal are quality and the fact Wenger admits this is his finest-ever team offensively gives you some idea of the awesome threat they now possess when rampaging forward.

Yet, equally, you have to put these results into perspective. The three other opponents in the competition are incredibly ordinary and they would struggle in the Championship.

While Wenger's team are not mathematically through to the knockout stages, they are effectively home and dry.

A double from Cesc Fabregas and strikes from Samir Nasri and Abou Diaby last night sealed an effortless triumph. Sub Jeremain Lens pulled one back for AZ towards the end - but this was a complete non-contest.

It was all so easy that Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin were all given early substitutions to rest their legs ahead of Saturday's trip to Wolves.

As for the matches against Standard Liege and Olympiakos, we will see some mix and match from Wenger, particularly for the final date in Greece on December 9 when Arsenal will presumably arrive as group winners.

Arsenal had been well and truly mugged two weeks earlier when they managed to turn what should have been a convincing win into a draw.

But there was no repeat as Arsenal took their goal tally for the season to a whopping 51.

It certainly helps, however, when you have a keeper at the other end like Sergio Romero.

This man, rather worryingly for Argentina, will be going to the World Cup as Diego Maradona's no 1 keeper. Romero was unable to keep out the tamest of efforts from Fabregas in the 25th minute and it was downhill from there.

With the first half drifting away, Arsenal stuck the knife in with a second. Arshavin played the ball through the middle and the impressive Nasri made his marker, Hector Moreno, look a complete fool.

The French striker dropped his shoulder, Moreno committed himself to a tackle and slid off in the wrong direction - and the Frenchman curled a shot into the corner past Romero.

The home supporters were singing 'Are you Tottenham in disguise' early in the second half as Arsenal tore through the crumbling visiting defence for a third.

Diaby intercepted a stray pass, fed Arshavin and his precise ball was met by Fabregas who lifted the ball over a stranded Romero.

Arsenal grabbed the fourth when sub Eduardo released Arshavin with a stunning backheel and the Russian found Diaby who stretched his legs and connected with a fine finish.

Sadly, the promising Kieran Gibbs was at fault for AZ's late consolation goal but that could not spoil an easy night in Europe.

Arsenal fans will certainly look at Liverpool's position in the Champions League this morning - and break into a very big smile

Van Persie: I am enjoying my new role
I'VE ADDED SOME PICTURES OF TODAYS TRAINING, YOU CAN SEE IT HERE!!

Striker Robin van Persie has admitted that he is enjoying his new role as the spearhead of the Arsenal attack.

The Dutch international was struggling to find the back of the net in the earlier weeks of the new season, with the midfield and defence chipping in with their goals.

But van Persie has finally grown accustomed to being the team's new target man, hitting 8 goals in his last 9 games, and is now the club's top scorer.

He also netted a brace in the 3-0 win over local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

In an interview with the official matchday programme, van Persie revealed how he finally got used to playing alone upfront, saying: "In the last four or five weeks I've felt much better.

"I've had to get used to the new role because I previously played as a second striker and now I'm operating as a main striker, so I needed to find my way in.

"To my mind, earlier in the season I lost too much energy working defensively and needed to find the right balance. It's really important for the team that I have enough energy to score goals and make assists, as well as helping out in other ways.

"I feel that in the last few weeks I've found that mix, of having the energy to do my offensive work and contribute defensively.

"It was hard in the first few weeks to really find my way – the second striker and striker are very close to each other on the pitch but at the same time there's such a difference, a massive difference, between the two roles.

"I like it because it's a new challenge for me and if you look at the results and the personal stats of almost every player, everyone has improved with the new system."

Van Persie - Family boosts my performances

Robin Van Persie has highlighted the importance of his family life in his current run of fine form.

The striker has scored seven goals in as many games for Arsenal, including a brace in the 3-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday.

The Dutchman recently celebrated the arrival of his second child and says enjoying his family life is pivotal to his on-field success.

"My family life is fantastic," he said.

"The main things in my life are my two kids and my wife. It makes you stable and gives you a good basis to perform."

Van Persie also admitted he had been feeling the effects of the recent birth of his second child, daughter Dina Layla.

"Two weeks ago, it was really hard and I was struggling physically but it's better now.

"When you play at this level, you need to recover and get your rest here and there and that is what I am doing."

Wenger - Van Persie can reach 25-goal mark

Arsène Wenger sees no reason why Robin Van Persie can’t score 25 goals this season.

The Dutchman topped Arsenal’s scoring charts with 20 last term and has already netted eight times in the current campaign, including a brace in the North London derby win over Tottenham on Saturday.

Van Persie took time to adapt to his new role as the figurehead of Wenger’s front three but a run of seven goals in seven games proves he has found his feet as a centre forward.

The Arsenal manager was full of praise for Van Persie after he topped and tailed the 3-0 win over Spurs. As far as Wenger is concerned, if Arsenal keep creating chances, the 26-year-old will keep taking them.

“I don’t want to set targets but why not?” said the Frenchman.

“If you look at the chances he has had since the start of the season you cannot say he won’t reach 25 goals.

“Robin has taken much more responsibility because he is up front. He has committed himself to the club for a long period and he is at an age, 26, where a footballer becomes really efficient, mature and wants to win things.

“That is why I believe he can be the best passer in the league and the best goalscorer in the league. When you look at the goals he scores they are always impressive.”

Van Persie operated in a ‘second striker’ role for much of his Arsenal career and often plays on the right of a front three for Holland. That’s why a few eyebrows were raised when Wenger deployed him as the centre forward in his new 4-3-3 formation but the Frenchman always had Van Persie in mind for that role.

“You don’t see him at the start as a target man but when you play him there you see he has everything of a target man,” explained Wenger.

“He has a short backlift, he is an intelligent player and turns very quickly. What he has around the box is very difficult to give to a striker. He moves away from the defenders around the box in a very perfect way. The timing of his runs are fantastic and that is why I thought he could play there.”

Van Persie wants to face City

Robin van Persie is hoping Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will alter his thinking ahead of their Carling Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City.

Wenger is resolute in his approach to the League Cup in that he allows his young players to play throughout the competition - no matter how far they get.

But Van Persie is hoping that against City he will be given the chance to play.

The two clubs were involved in a highly-charged league clash earlier this season which saw City triumph 4-2 on home soil.

The game was remembered for Emmanuel Adebayor scoring against his old club and running the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans, whilst the Togo striker also stamped on Van Persie - for which he received a ban.

Now Van Persie is hoping he will get the chance to play at Eastlands at the start of December.

"I want to play in that one. I'd love to play. If the boss decides to let me play, I'm happy," said Van Persie.

"It will be a good game because Man City have a good side.

"If we can find the right mix - like we did in the last round against Liverpool we've a big chance of winning."

Robin Van Persie Is Thierry Bergkamp - Arsene Wenger

RVP is a mixture of two Arsenal greats, says Wenger...

Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on striker Robin van Persie by comparing him to former Gunners greats Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.

The Dutch international scored twice in yesterday’s 3-0 win over neighbours Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates to take his tally for the season to seven.

His good form has been warmly welcomed by Wenger who admitted he was vital to Arsenal’s hopes of success this season.

"He is the kind of player, with the type of game we play, who is vital because when you play the ball to his feet his first touch is always perfect and that allows others to join in," the Frenchman is quoted by the Press Association as saying.

"It makes everybody dangerous. In the box he is clever and intelligent."

The Arsenal boss also likened his striker to both Henry and Bergkamp revealing he saw qualities of both forwards in Van Persie’s play.

Wenger added: "He is a mixture. He is less of a runner than Thierry Henry and he is not completely Dennis Bergkamp because he plays higher up the pitch."

Tottenham "died" after Arsenal scored their first goal in today's north London derby, according to man of the match Robin van Persie.

Spurs were reasonably comfortable until the Dutchman scored the first after 42 minutes, which was followed within seconds by a wonder strike from Cesc Fabregas who was allowed to stride through the visitors' defence.

But Van Persie, who added the third in the second half of the 3-0 Arsenal win, denied suggestions Spurs brought it on themselves, telling Sky Sports 1: "They played with the right attitude, good spirit.

"It was a tight, tough first half hour, but from the moment we scored the first goal they died basically."

PREMIER LEAGUE: Arsenal 3-0 Tottenham

I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!! ROBIN SCORED TWO GOALS! AND HE CELEBRATED THE FACT THAT HE BECAME A FATHER OF A BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER!

Tottenham have not beaten Arsenal in the league for 10 years and, while their line-up has changed in that time, the habit of defeat in the derby fixture has become entrenched. The visitors were almost insistent that Arsène Wenger's team should score each of their goals.

Arsenal, for all their accomplishment, did not even have the opportunity to look that suave when the opposition were making such rudimentary errors.

In the 42nd minute, Bacary Sagna tossed a throw-in to Cesc Fábregas, took the return and rolled a low cross towards the near post, where Robin van Persie got in front of Ledley King for the first of his two goals. Heurelho Gomes was beaten easily by the low finish.

It will have been still more disturbing for Harry Redknapp that his line-up should be in disarray from the kick-off. Arsenal doubled their advantage in 11 seconds. Once Wilson Palacios had kicked the ball against Van Persie, Fábregas broke away from Tom Huddlestone and King before shooting low beyond the right hand of Gomes.

Tottenham were not uniformly abject, but they had lost the capacity to protect themselves.

After 61 minutes, both sides paused as referee Mark Clattenburg played an advantage following a foul on the substitute Eduardo. Arsenal, predictably, were quicker to return to action.

Sagna put a low ball into the middle and Gomes' touch seemed to tip the cross away from King so that Van Persie could tuck the ball into the net for his second goal. Tottenham's demoralisation was almost tangible.

Robbie Keane, who had mused beforehand that his club might now have a better squad than Arsenal's, was taken off in the 65th minute, leaving the captain to begin a period of reflection that will be shared by everyone at White Hart Lane.

Carling cup: Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool
ROBIN DIDN'T PLAY THIS MATCH!!

(CNN) -- Arsenal's youngsters condemned Liverpool to their fifth defeat in six games with a 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium to reach the quarterfinals of the English League Cup on Wednesday night.

Liverpool only retained Dirk Kuyt from the team which ended a run of four straight defeats to beat Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday while Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger famously gives his teenage hopefuls their chance in the competition.

It was 19-year-old Fran Merida who put them ahead with a superb first half strike which went in off the post but Emiliano Insua equalized with a stunning volley before the interval.

The more experienced Niklas Bendtner scored the winner on 50 minutes as he produced a powerful left foot finish.

Liverpool had several openings to level and gave a welcome first outing to Alberto Aquilani, who came off the bench to make his debut after his close season signing from Roma.

The midfielder, who has been battling injury, was involved in several promising moves and had a strong penalty appeal turned down when his shot struck the arm of Philippe Senderos.

But Arsenal held on for a deserved victory with Wenger applauding the contributions of both teams.

"The quality of the game was outstanding," he told Sky Sports.

"Both teams played very well and at the very end there was very little to separate them," he added.

West Ham United 2 Arsenal 2

I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

I'VE ALSO ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE COMPETITION GAME AGAINST BIRMINGHAM CITY, OCT. 17, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Redemption for Rafael Benitez but, come May, an equally important

narrative from today’s football may yet involve Arsenal and the manner in which they failed to punish slips from their main rivals in the Premier League title.

Since back-to-back defeats in Manchester, Arsenal had quietly and efficiently put together a run of four consecutive league victories to support Arsene Wenger’s rather bullish claim that he is “convinced” his team will win a trophy this season.

With so many unpredictable results all around them, the reward for such consistency could be found in the league table and the chance to move within three points of Chelsea with a game in hand.

Yet familiar weaknesses were again evident as they allowed West Ham United to recover from a 2-0 deficit to scramble a 2-2 draw.

It followed a similar frustration in the Champions League on Wednesday against AZ Alkmaar, when an injury-time goal denied them victory.

Wenger had said on Friday that he would have to be unfair on someone with his selection as goalkeeper and, once again, it was Manuel Almunia who missed out, leading to the assumption that Vito Mannone now genuinely is his first choice.

Mannone’s shot-stopping ability is clear but, at the age of only 21, erratic moments are also always likely and one misguided clearance in the opening moments yesterday would have left many Arsenal fans behind him in the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand holding their breath.

There were other worrying moments in the opening 15 minutes with West Ham, desperately in need of points, pressurising Arsenal as Scott Parker, who had returned from suspension, and Mark Noble formed an encouraging base in central midfield.

With Carlton Cole occupying Arsenal defenders, Jack Collision created space on the edge of the penalty area, although his shot was well saved by Mannone and the follow-up controversially ruled illegal after Guillermo Franco was wrongly adjudged to have wandered into an offside position.

Yet while West Ham had their share of possession, Arsenal were initially more incisive in front of goal.

Having had one shot controversially blocked by the arm of Matthew Upson, Robin van Persie scored in his fourth consecutive league game with a simple finish following an error from Robert Green.

Bacary Sagna had exchanged passes with Abou Diaby and crossed into the West Ham penalty but, with James Tomkins ready to head the ball clear, Green came off hiss line and succeeding only in impeding his defender to leave Van Persie with an open goal.

West Ham enjoyed further pressure without any end product before William Gallas doubled the lead shortly before half-time from a Van Persie corner.

Poor defending again contributed as Herita Ilunga was easily out-jumped by Gallas, whose header also eluded Parker on the line.

Arsenal had further chances to finish West Ham, but Cesc Fabregas shot narrowly wide and then Andrei Arshavin forced an excellent save from Green.

This spurred West Ham and they were handed a lifeline when Mannone parried Alessandro Diamanti’s shot into the path of a grateful Cole. West Ham were then denied what looked a definite penalty when Gallas tripped Parker as he surged into the penalty area.

Moments later there was another clumsy Arsenal challenge as Alex Song tried to dispossess Cole and, this time, referee Chris Foy was satisfied there had been contact. It took an age for the kick to be taken but, even after

Mannone had been booked for delaying tactics, Diamanti smashed the ball into the right-hand corner. There was further drama as Parker was sent off for a second bookable challenge when he slid in front of Fabregas and appeared to handle the ball.

Arsenal had one final chance to clinch victory, but Green made up for his earlier error by saving Van Persie’s goal-bound header with his out-stretched leg.

Robin van Persie: Dutch Draw Was Not A Bad Result For Arsenal
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY! YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Striker not too displeased despite late equaliser...

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie was not too downbeat after last night's Champions League draw at AZ Alkmaar, despite the disappointing way the Gunners conceded an injury time equaliser.

Arsene Wenger's team dominated proceedings in Holland, but were undone by a late strike from Mendes da Silva. Van Persie felt that the draw was not such a bad result away from home in Europe.

"AZ played very well and were sharp for the first 20 minutes, but everyone does against us," the striker told Goal.com Netherlands.

"So that is not a new thing. Usually we take over and that was what we did tonight, without playing spectacularly.

"We should have won this game but we got the goal in added time against us. That is a bit lucky for AZ, although the goal was good play.

"A draw in a Champions League-away game is not bad. Of course we wanted to win, but I'm not unsatisfied."

And the Dutchman felt that the draw was a good result for financially troubled AZ, whilst not seriously damaging the Gunners' chances of success in the group.

He added: "On the other hand it is nice for AZ. They are in a difficult period. We wont die because of this draw. We will go through anyway. They need it more than we do."

AZ salvages 1-1 draw against Arsenal

ALKMAAR, Netherlands (AP) — Midfielder David Mendes da Silva scored in the last minute of stoppage time Tuesday to salvage a 1-1 draw for AZ Alkmaar against Arsenal in the Champions League.

Andrei Arshavin and Robin van Persie had combined to set up Cesc Fabregas, who gave Arsenal the lead with a low shot in the 36th. But Graziano Pelle's header in the final seconds found da Silva, who volleyed home from close range to stun Arsenal and end the English club's perfect start in Group H.

Arsenal has seven points from three games, while AZ has two.

"This is a morale-boosting draw for us," AZ captain Stijn Schaars said. "You have to be realistic, Arsenal is a very good team with a a lot of quality, so it feels nice to get a draw against them."

Van Persie got an early chance to put Arsenal ahead from eight meters (yards) but the former Feyernoord forward saw his ninth-minute shot blocked by AZ goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Wearing shirts with no logo after main sponsor DSB Bank NV was recently declared bankrupt, AZ enjoyed superior ball possession in the first half. But it failed to create any meaningful chances until the 25th, when striker Mounir El Hamdaoui fired wide from the edge of area.

Arsenal responded two minutes later with Emmanuel Eboue setting up Arshavin, but the Russian's close-range effort went over the bar.

Arshavin then stole the ball from defender Niklas Moisander and released it to van Persie, who crossed the ball for Fabregas to slot in.

Romero kept AZ in the game with a save in the 42nd, parrying van Persie's long-range shot.

Romero also made a diving save to deny van Persie's curling free kick in the 50th.

Arshavin could have doubled Arsenal's advantage, but his 89th-minute shot was saved by Romero.

With Arsenal looking set to come away with another away win, Schaars flighted the ball into the Arsenal area and found Pelle, whose goal-bound header was converted by da Silva.

'Van Persie's cast in Van Basten's mould'

Arsène Wenger has given Robin van Persie perhaps the highest praise a striker can ever receive – by making comparisons to Marco van Basten.

The latter was perhaps the greatest all-round forward the modern game has seen. The Dutchman led his country to success in Euro 88 and AC Milan to a clutch of honours two decades ago.

Van Persie is hardly a carbon copy but, Wenger argues, the 26-year-old has strong technical similarities.

“I think he’s a Van Basten type,” he said. “By which I mean he’s a technical centre forward. He has that classy first touch, sharp movement and a short back-lift.

“I always thought he was more a first striker than second striker and I must say I love him there because he has a brain. He can play others in and he can score. His movement is intelligent around the box and if we score a lot of goals a big part is down to him.

“Look at the one he scored [against Birmingham on Saturday]. You can say it was a bit lucky but you need a specialist soft touch to control the ball in that situation. With a normal player, the ball goes five yards away but with his second touch he puts it straight back on his left leg and scores.”

Arsenal 6 - 2 Blackburn Rovers
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY! YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

An instrumental Cesc Fabregas helped Arsenal bag SIX goals at the Emirates against Blackburn Rovers.

Rovers took a shocking lead through Nzonzi, before Thomas Vermaelen equalised with a fierce drive from outside the box.

David Dunn then saw his shot bundled in but Robin Van Persie replied instantly for the Gunners. Arsenal upped the tempo and Cesc Fabregas ran the show as he set up Arshavin for the third before half time.

Fabregas volleyed in the fourth before Walcott and Bendtner completed the scoreline with some good strikes.

The home side were warmed in by the presence of the Arsenal legend Thierry Henry who received a standing ovation from the crowd. However once the game started, everybody shell shocked when Nzonzi headed over Mannone to give Blackburn a surprising lead.

Arsenal looked for a reply and in came top goal scorer Vermaelen. After good combination between Fabregas and Diaby, the former found the Belgium international just outside the area. Vermaelen took one quick touch to give him some space before unleashing a left foot drive into the bottom corner- scorcher!

Arsenal attacked and attacked but Robinson saved well before Rovers countered. Di Santo finding Dunn who drove at William Gallas, cut inside and shot towards goal. The ball took a wicked deflection and went in, nothing Mannone could have done about that one.

Minutes late, Fabregas split the defence in two when he found Van Persie, the Dutchman made no mistakes when he cooly slotted the ball into the bottom corner with a left foot shot. The home side were rampant, and went into the break firmly in the lead when Arshavin raced on to Fabregas’s pass to drive a low strike past Robinson.

The Arsenal skipper was having a blast and rounded off a perfect performance after half time. After patient build up from the home side, Rosicky lofted a ball just outside the box; the bounce favoured the Spaniard and he hammered in a volley into the top corner- beauty!

A goal Henry would have been proud of!

The away team forced Mannone into a great save before Walcott made his first start to the season. Rovers managed to hit the post after a shot from Hoilett deflected off Vermaelen.

Arsenal created more chances as Diaby shot wide before the Gunners showed a blistering counter attack in which Fabregas slipped in Walcott. The Englishman side footed first time into the bottom corner to open his scoring account for the season.

Fabregas was given a standing ovation after a man- of- the match display as he was replaced by Nicklas Bendtner. The Dane missed a glorious chance when he shot straight at Robinson but managed to smash in a beautiful shot from outside the box

Arsenal 2 - 0 Olympiakos
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY! YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Arsenal needed late goals from Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin to see off Olympiakos despite dominating their Champions League Group H clash.

The Gunners wasted a series of chances, with Cesc Fabregas firing against the bar and Antonis Nikopolidis making a succession of saves for the Greek side.

Van Persie finally broke the deadlock with 12 minutes left, slotting home Eduardo's cross after a neat move.

Arshavin made it 2-0 with a clever flick, despite appearing to be offside.

The win continues Arsenal's 100% start to their European campaign and they sit on top of their group after AZ Alkmaar drew with Standard Liege.

At times, their approach play was breathtaking, with Arshavin in particular standing out as he mixed crisp one-touch passing with the ability to run at - and often straight through - the visitors' defence.

But the Gunners' finishing was a different story and, although 38-year-old Nikopolidis made a string of stops, their failure to break the deadlock until the 78th minute was more down to poor finishing than any inspirational goalkeeping.

Arshavin was the first to test the former Greek international, firing in a first-time shot after a sublime pass by Fabregas was followed by some equally deft skill by Gael Clichy.

Nikopolidis was beaten soon afterwards when Fabregas sent his shot crashing against the crossbar, but he recovered to acrobatically keep out Tomas Rosicky's follow-up.

The chances continued to flow for Arsene Wenger's men, with Arshavin's low effort tipped wide after a mazy dribble into the box before Fabregas was denied again following another neat build-up.

It took Olympiakos 34 minutes to manage an meaningful attack of their own, with Vassilis Torosidis heading straight at Vito Mannone from Dudu's deep cross.

But Arsenal were soon back on the attack and ended the half in the same way they began it, with Van Persie firing over before Vassiriki Diaby headed wastefully wide when unmarked in front of goal.

The Greek champions did fashion the first opening of the second half, with Mannone doing well to scoop away Olof Mellberg's header on his goalline as Vassilis Torosidis prepared to pounce.

But they spent the remainder of the game on the back-foot, desperately trying to contain wave after wave of attacks.

Nikopolidis made further stops from Van Persie and Diaby but the home side remained patient and eventually got their reward.

Fabregas slid subsitute Eduardo clear down the left and he squared the ball for Van Persie to slam the ball home from close range.

Olympiakos tried to respond but only succeeded in leaving gaps at the back and they were punished further with four minutes to go.

Arshavin appeared a yard offside when he skilfully turned in a low Fabregas cross but he deserved his goal after an impressive individual performance.

'Van Persie technique is important to team'

Arsène Wenger says there is no better player than Robin van Persie when it comes to controlling and passing the ball in front of goal.

The Gunners manager also said that the Dutchman's technique is crucial to the way Arsenal play.

"He has such a short technique that he can bring other players in," said Wenger.

"We play with plenty of offensive players, so it is important you have somebody up front who can make a short control or a short pass.

"There is no better player than Robin at that."

The Frenchman also pointed out that Van Persie is "a great goalscorer", highlighting the goal against Fulham as a prime example of the striker's ability.

"It is a fantastic goal. The ball in was brilliant, the first touch is brilliant, and the second touch is in the back of the net. It was all perfect."

Wenger - Don't condemn candid Van Persie

Arsène Wenger has defended Robin van Persie following his candid comments about 'exaggerating' to win free-kicks and penalties.

The Dutchman made his opposition to 'diving' patently clear when he spoke to the media last week but went on to argue that players were within their rights to demonstrate to referees when they were genuinely fouled on the football pitch.

Van Persie admitted that he had exaggerated fouls to ensure justice was done on the field of play but his honesty was misread as cynicism in some quarters. Wenger sought to put the record straight when the issue cropped up again at his pre-match press conference on Monday.

"I did not understand what some people made of that," said Wenger. "Sometimes when a striker is fouled, he wants to make sure the referee sees that, which is what basically Robin was talking about. He wanted to show there is a difference between what people call diving and being fouled.

"In fact, the television showed a great example of it when at Manchester United a penalty was not given when [Patrice] Evra fouled Van Persie 100 per cent. He had to go down, but when you go down, you make sure the referee notices you have been fouled."

English football has a long-standing reputation for tolerating 'hard but fair' tackling - certainly more than the other leading European leagues - but Wenger believes that the balance is being redressed on the continent.

"There is a trend all over Europe to give less fouls and less penalties than before," he said.

"In Italy there was a stage when they gave a penalty every time somebody collapsed. Now, I think they have rectified that well, they let the flow of the game go and it is very important because when you do not have that, the games are not interesting.

"The referees have a big responsibility because they are always on the fringe of letting the game go, or not letting it go too far. If they do not let the game go, the game becomes boring."

Robin van Persie breakthrough for Arsenal foils Fulham

The story of this tense match was encapsulated in the facial expressions of its two goalkeepers. Fulham's Mark Schwarzer, for much of the game under-employed, was a picture of smooth composure. Down the other end, Vito Mannone looked like a young boxer thrown into the ring for the first time against someone looking to bust his nose. At times, his eyes could not have grown wider as Fulham bore down on his goal and Arsenal's defence evaporated in front of him. But every time he and his gloves did the business.

But for the heroic performance from their rookie goalkeeper, Arsenal might have been in no position to take anything positive back across London. The 21-year-old, the club's third-choice keeper who made his Premier League debut only last weekend, produced a string of saves. At full-time, one by one his team-mates rushed to embrace him. Arsène Wenger was moved to award him a "ten out of ten".

Against this foundation, Arsenal needed only one moment of clarity in the opposite goalmouth to secure all the points. In the 52nd minute Cesc Fábregas conjured a pass which enabled Robin van Persie to canter between Fulham's centre-backs and slide a right-footed finish into the far corner.

Not that the goal was the signal for Fulham heads to drop. Wenger was full of admiration for their commitment. "They are always fantastic against us," he noted. "I couldn't see one player who did not fight for one second. It was good for us to win like this. Without attitude and spirit of our own, we would not have three points."

Fulham justifiably felt galled that their relentless work went unrewarded. They are notably goal shy in the league this term – with only Portsmouth scoring fewer – although Roy Hodgson did point out in mitigation that they have played four of last season's top five in a punishing start.

Having lost three games in succession, Hodgson tried in vain to take heart from the quality of the performance. "I don't honestly think we can play any better than this," he concluded. "But it doesn't help."

Fulham exposed Arsenal's defensive unsteadiness early on when Zoltan Gera whipped in a cross. Without any clear danger, William Gallas and Mannone collided painfully – there was an evident lack of communication.

The Italian keeper was better left to his own devices – and responded when he was exposed in the 14th minute by another Gera cross, clawing away Andy Johnson's header before Clint Dempsey's scooped follow-up bounced off him. Ten minutes before the break, Mannone was on hand again to palm away an angled drive from Gera.

But there was a lurking fear in the air for Fulham. The more they squandered chances, the likelier Arsenal would punish them with a moment of skill. And so it proved when Fábregas and Van Persie combined to write that script.

Schwarzer saved Fulham from further damage, repelling a cross-shot from Bendtner, and his team-mates broke in search of the equaliser. Mannone rescued Arsenal again with another stop to smother Johnson's header.

Dempsey hit a post in the 66th minute, and moments later Gallas threw himself in front of Bobby Zamora. As time ticked on, Mannone again came to the fore to scramble Johnson's shot away from the bottom corner – a save he topped to thwart Zamora's header from point-blank range.

"He kept us in the game with some unbelievable situations," said Wenger. "He has shown he has the potential to be a top goalkeeper. He loves football, has outstanding physical qualities and reflexes, and works hard every day to improve." His debut had been quite traumatic, as Arsenal found themselves 2-0 down in Liège in the Champions League, but since then the game has been kind to him.

Emmanuel Eboué and Nicklas Bendtner could have finished it for Arsenal. But thanks to Mannone, 1-0 was enough.

Van Persie: Anyone can beat us if we don't perform

STRIKER WARNS AGAINST COMPLACENCY

Robin van Persie has warned Arsenal must be on their guard in Europe this season against all calibre of opposition after a scare in their first group match against Standard Liege.

The draw for the opening group stages of the Champions League was kind to the Gunners, who had to come through a two-leg qualifier against Celtic, throwing up clashes with Standard Liege, Dutch newcomer AZ Alkmaar and Greek side Olympiakos, the visitors to Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Arsene Wenger's men, however, faced a tough opening Group H fixture at the compact Maurice Dufrasne Stadium, where a blistering start from the Belgians left Arsenal 2-0 down inside the first five minutes before battling back to win with a late goal from Eduardo.

Van Persie, 26, accepts Arsenal cannot afford to take any challenge lightly if they are to go one better than last season's semi-final appearance.

"It is a good draw for us name wise, but as a player you need to produce in every single game because our opponents look at it from a different point of view,'' Van Persie told the October edition of the official Arsenal magazine. "They will give all they have against us. We need to be ready for that.

"I think we are, because we all know how football works when you do not give 100% - any team can beat you, even a Blue Square League team. When you do not do everything, you are gone. We will do that in this group and have a good chance of going through.''

Holland international Van Persie was Arsenal's leading scorer last season with 20 goals from 44 appearances.

During the summer there was speculation linking him with a move away from Emirates Stadium, perhaps even to rivals Manchester United, before Van Persie committed to the Arsenal cause by agreeing a new long-term deal reportedly worth around £80,000-a-week and so becoming one of the highest paid players at the club in the process.

Van Persie insists leaving was "not a serious issue'' and has vowed to help Arsenal end their four-season trophy drought - a barren run which must have seemed inconceivable when the young Dutchman arrived five years ago at a club then sweeping all before them. It is, though, not always just about silverware.

"I want to give what I hope are my best years to Arsenal, because I love the club and want to succeed here,'' Van Persie said. "And it is not just about winning trophies - I can say that in the last five years I have won lots of trophies myself as a human, if you see what I mean, as well as footballing achievements.

"The steps I have made from day one to now are, I think, big. I am really just thankful for the chance to have done that - thankful to the fans, the boss, the players, to everyone who has a warm heart for Arsenal. So it is not simply about trophies, it is the whole story of Arsenal giving me lots of positive things. Of course the end result is trophies and I want that - but I am not closing my mind to what is happening day in and day out at this club.''

Standard Liege 2 Arsenal 3

As Belgium star Vermaelen cleared a corner, it dropped to Eduardo whose attempt at a fancy flick fell into the path of Eliaquim Mangala.

Liege's centre-back could not believe his good fortune and he fired in a 20-yard shot which beat rookie keeper Vitor Mannone at the near post.

The damage quickly got worse.Gallas appeared to have Jovanovic under his control as the Serbian striker collected a ball in the box.

But, when Jovanovic attempted to come inside, down he went with Gallas adjudged to have clipped his opponent's heel.

Spanish referee Eduardo Gonzalez had no doubt it was a penalty but replays suggested Jovanovic made the most of it.

Whatever the truth, up stepped Jovanovic to double the lead.

"It was harsh," said boss Arsene Wenger afterwards before adding with a smile. "It's a case we can win on appeal."

Wenger said his troops were caught cold. Too right. They were frozen to the spot.

Poor Mannone had touched the ball twice - both times to pick it out of the net.

The 21-year-old was only playing because of sickness to first choice Manuel Almunia and injury to reserve stopper Lukasz Fabianski.

The Italian looked nervous and the crowd could sense it. His kicking suffered badly as he repeatedly sliced clearances.

For Arsenal it was all horribly reminiscent of their last game in the Champions League proper, the semi-final with Manchester United that saw them ship two goals in the opening 11 minutes.

With the Gunners also missing Andrey Arshavin, Denilson, Theo Walcott, Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie it was a big ask to come back.

Having lost their previous two league games against both Manchester clubs, Arsenal were staring at a third defeat in a row for the first time in seven years.

Tomas Rosicky, making his first start in 20 months after a serious hamstring injury, tried to get his team going but they were absolutely shell-shocked.

Gradually, though, Arsenal found their rhythm and pulled a goal back just before half-time.

Midfielder Abou Diaby did extremely well to turn Mangala and played in Bendtner down the right.

The Danish striker was on to the ball before the home defence could react and he fired through the legs of keeper Sinan Bolat. It was the lifeline Arsenal needed.

Early in the second half, Emmanuel Eboue performed heroics to turn a low Wilfried Dalmat cross over his own bar - and from that point the Gunners began to wear down their opponents.

But there was a large slice of fortune or two for the equaliser. A Fabregas free-kick was floated to the far post, where centre-half Vermaelen and midfielder Song seemed offside.

As Song fell over, the ball hit his arm before dropping to Vermaelen to finish it off from close range.

Liege coach Laszlo Boloni protested: "Two offside and they played it with the hand."

Arsenal were not satisfied with a draw.

And after 81 minutes Eduardo kneed the ball in from Fabregas' corner to grab all three points.

Van Persie reaction to Adebayor incident
I've added the pictures of the match to the gallery!! You can see them HERE!!

Robin van Persie has issued the following statement following an incident with Emmanuel Adebayor at Saturday's game:

"I am sad and disappointed by my former team-mate Emmanuel Adebayor's mindless and malicious stamp on me during today's match.

"We are both professional footballers and I know that the game is physical, I too have made hard and sometimes mis-timed challenges but never with the intention of hurting an opponent. He set out to hurt me today.

HERE IS THE VIDEO OF THE INCIDENT:

"I knew he was aiming for a collision because he changed the angle of his body to allow contact to be made. He moved backwards when his natural momentum would have taken him forward. I find that deeply disrespectful. He has shown a real lack of class today, to me and the fans.

"I do feel lucky that I have not suffered a greater injury. The contact was only centimetres from my eye. I have not received an apology from him, there were no words exchanged afterwards. He had his own agenda today and that is bad for football. It's bad for the game we all love.

"I want to make it clear that this has nothing to do with the result of today's match. We do not hide from that disappointment but I need to speak out about his behaviour."

Manchester city 4-2 Arsenal
I've added the pictures of the match to the gallery!! You can see them HERE!!

"Sometimes, the emotion takes over. That's what happened. I was very happy to score the goal. Before the game, people have been saying and writing things and the emotions took over.

"People who love me and know me know how I behave."

Adebayor could also be in hot water after appearing to boot Van Persie in the face.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger missed the incident - but has promised to give it a thorough going over.

He said: "I have heard about it on the radio.

"But I have not actually seen the incident because the ball moved away pretty quickly. I will have to look at it and assess it."

In the pre-game warm-up, Adebayor had been public enemy No 1 with his old employers.

The hated Togo striker was IGNORED by his old team-mates and viciously jeered by the away crowd.

And, just minutes into the tie, the £25million hitman got even further up the Gunners' noses — flooring Cesc Fabregas with a studs-up lunge.

Another big money man found himself in hot water shortly after when Joleon Lescott was booked for poleaxing Denilson.

But on 20 minutes City got their fluky breakthrough.

Bacary Sagna chopped down Bellamy 20 yards from goal. Gareth Barry floated in the free-kick, Richards thundered a header against the post — and saw it cannon in off Almunia.

The Spaniard dusted himself off to come and claim a Shaun Wright-Phillips cross after the restart.

Shay Given was called into action seconds later — claiming a Nicklas Bendtner centre in a carbon-copy attack.

Barry lined up another free-kick, and when his dangerous cross was only half-cleared to Bellamy, the Welsh ace's volley flicked wide off William Gallas.

Moments before the break, City launched a lightening counter attack after Van Persie's corner went begging.

And the Gunners needed Gael Clichy to step in and rob Stephen Ireland, who loitered too long with the ball in the visitors' box.

Just seven minutes after the interval, Wenger hit the panic button.

He hauled off Brazilian Denilson and brought on Rosicky as the Arsenal boss turned to his Plan B.

And the Frenchman's tinkering paid off when his men struck the leveller.

The Gunners' goal had been under threat until Bellamy saw his shot snuffed out. And a speedy breakaway set up Dutch ace Van Persie, who tucked his shot away from the edge of the box.

After a scuffle, hot-headed Adebayor seemed to boot Van Persie in the face. He got off scot-free — and things got worse for Wenger when City stormed back into the lead.

Bellamy swivelled in the Arsenal box before smashing past Almunia.

Adebayor and Wright-Phillips then fired home before Rosicky grabbed his late consolation.

Van Persie: Money is not everything

Striker Robin van Persie has aimed criticism at clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester City, who he says are attempting to 'buy a team'.

In an eventful summer transfer window, Madrid purchased Kaka for £56 million and Cristiano Ronaldo for £80 million, whilst City spent approximately £200 million recruiting new players.

But purchasing players at over-inflated prices does not guarantee you success or trophies, and that it's important for these players to feel that they are playing as part of a team, an approach that is working at Arsenal.

van Persie said: "Here [at Arsenal] we'd never buy a player who costs £40 or £50million. If you look at clubs who have spent that kind of money then I don't see them playing as a team.

"If you look at our transfer policy then you can see how players respond when the manager puts faith in them. If you think of yourself as part of a group then you are prepared to work hard for results together.

"A £40m player feels pressure. They are going to be judged more than some guy who has come from the youth policy and then he thinks in terms of one person and not the team."

Arsenal take on Manchester City today in a match that will pit van Persie against former team mate Kolo Touré, who signed for City in the summer.

Scotland 0-1 Holland
I'VE ADDED SOME PICTURES OF TODAYS MATCH, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Eight games played and eight matches won, the Dutch national football team beat Scotland in its last qualifier for the World Cup completing a stunning 100 percent record. While the Dutch had already qualified for next year's tournament in South Africa, defeat ended Scotland's hopes of making the World Cup in South Africa.

It only took four minutes for the Dutch to create the first good chance of the game with Dirk Kuijt shooting against the post with the Scottish keeper David Marhall well beaten.

The Scottish keeper was again in action in the opening phase of the match when he had to tip a long-distance shot from Wesley Sneijder over the bar.

The Scots too created chances in the first half with Dutch keeper Michel Vorm making a great save from Kenny Miller who also later hit the crossbar.

At half-time the score was still nil-nil and it wasn't until ten minutes before the end of the game that deadlock was broken, Dutch substitute Eljero Elia making his mark with a brilliant piece of individual skill.

As ever the team is full of wonderful individual players and as ever the question is, will the Dutch be able to deliver when it comes to the finals themselves next year.

Netherlands beat Japan 3-0 in friendly
I'VE ADDED SOME PICTURES OF TODAYS MATCH, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

ENSCHEDE, Netherlands (AP) — Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar each scored Saturday to give the Netherlands a 3-0 win over Japan in an international friendly.

Nigel de Jong and Eljero Elia combined to set up a well-positioned Van Persie, who controlled the ball inside the area and stroked in a powerful shot past goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi in the 69th minute. Sneijder added a goal five minutes later, collecting Demy de Zeeuw's pass before beating Kawaguchi with a long-range shot.

Huntelaar made it 3-0, converting Elia's cross in the 86th.

Sneijder could miss the Netherlands' final group game against Scotland on Wednesday after sustaining a knee injury.

Both Netherlands and Japan have already picked up qualifying berths for the World Cup in South Africa.

Japan takes on Ghana in another international friendly Wednesday.

Japan made a strong start with Shunsuke Nakamura, Keiji Tamada and Shinji Okazaki each getting scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes.

The Netherlands, however, struggled to create any meaningful chances in the first half with Van Persie twice missing the target.

"We didn't made a good start," Netherlands captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst said. "We lost a lot of possession and made a lot of mistakes, but we came back a better side in the second."

Yuto Nagatomo's left-footed shot from the edge of the area could have put Japan in front in the 50th, but it went wide. Twelve minutes later, Piet Velthuizen, who had replaced Michel Vorm in the 46th, made a diving save to deny Nakamura from 30 meters (yards).

With the second-half introduction of Elia, the pace of the Netherlands game changed. Before setting up goals, Elia got the Netherlands' first shot on target in the 55th, which Kawaguchi cleared for a corner.

"It was our worst performances so far," said Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijck, who took over from Marco van Basten after last year's European Championship. "We were slow and we were not well-organized. At halftime, I told them you should learn to win a game even if you are not playing your best game."

Vorm replaced the injured Maarten Stekelenburg in the Netherlands goal with Van Marwijk giving Celtic defender Glenn Loovens his debut.

Japan midfielder Keisuke Honda, who has scored five goals for VVV Venlo in the Dutch league, did not start but came on as a second-half substitute for Keiji Tamada.

Japan coach Takeshi Okada, who has won 15 of his 29 games in charge, picked Yasuhito Endo, Makoto Hasebe and Nakamura in a three-man midfield.

Arsenal 3-1 Celtic
ROBIN DID NOT PLAY YESTERDAY, SO THERE ARE NO PICTURES!! BUT I DID ADD SOME TRAININGSPICTURES OF AUG.25, CLICK HERE TO SEE THEM!!

EDUARDO DA SILVA had better not visit Glasgow any time soon.

Not unless he has developed a taste for hospital food.

Arsenal's Croatian international striker has already spent more than enough time in plaster following his horrific leg break last year

But that would be nothing compared to the damage he would suffer if the angry Celtic fans could get their hands on him.

For those travelling supporters will return to Scotland this morning convinced their team have been cheated of the chance to compete with Europe's elite.

And who can blame them, after Eduardo's outrageous first-half dive to con Spanish referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez?

All 2,600 Celtic supporters in the Emirates' away end had a bird's eye view of the appalling act of simulation which led to Arsenal's decisive penalty.

Unlike Senor Gonzalez, they could clearly see there was no contact between Eduardo and keeper Artur Boruc before the Brazilian-born lightweight threw himself to the ground.

It was so blatant even the infamously myopic Arsene Wenger conceded it was never a penalty.

No wonder Boruc went loco when Gonzalez pointed to the spot. It was almost enough to make you feel sorry for our Caledonian chums. Almost.

To add insult to injury, it was Eduardo who dusted himself off to send Boruc the wrong way with his unerring 27th-minute penalty.

It was a travesty of a goal and one which allowed Celtic to claim they had been the victims of an appalling miscarriage of justice.

A deflection and an own-goal in the first leg and a dive in the second. That is what they will swear has sealed the Gunners' Champions League place for a 12th successive season.

The truth, of course, is that Celtic were comprehensively outplayed by Wenger's young team over the two legs of this qualifying tie.

They hardly threatened Manuel Almunia's goal until Massimo Donati's stunning angled volley with the final kick of the game.

But that consolation strike was as good as it got for the pride of Scotland. William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen were once again outstanding at the heart of Arsenal's back four, while Denilson and Abou Diaby totally ran the midfield.

Even Nicklas Bendtner looked a potential world-beater when his clever back-heel allowed Emmanuel Eboue to finish off a sublime Arsenal move in the 54th minute.

And it was the same sorry story for Celtic 20 minutes later, when Andrey Arshavin exchanged passes with fellow sub Aaron Ramsey to score within seconds of his introduction.

Yet the undisputed reality of Arsenal's superiority has still been tainted by Eduardo's gamesmanship.

The sad thing is he did not need to resort to skulduggery. He more than had the beating of Celtic's defence with his God-given ability.

He should have put this tie beyond Celtic's reach in the opening minutes but stabbed the ball wide after Boruc had clawed out Bendtner's shot.

And he was denied by another flying save from Celtic's giant Polish keeper shortly before the break.

Tony Mowbray's team were already well beaten by then, the last remaining stuffing knocked out of them by that contentious penalty.

All they had to offer after that was Scottish pride and a burning sense of grievance. Yet what they lacked in quality they more than made up for with commitment and effort. Like an angry swarm of radioactive wasps in their day-glo hooped shirts, they snapped and flapped in Arsenal's ears.

Gary Caldwell and Aidan McGeady were both yellow carded for industrial-strength challenges on Eboue and Diaby. Denilson and Scott Brown were also booked for a late bust-up.

No one would have relished those meaty tussles more than watching Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson, ahead of Saturday's visit from Arsenal.

Wenger insists that qualification for the Champions League is far more important than any Premier League trip to Old Trafford.

But Saturday's encounter with United will tell us just how good his youngsters really are.

No one at the Emirates has forgotten the ruthless manner in which they were taken apart in the semi-finals of last season's Champions League.

They are determined to show they are now genuine trophy contenders, after far too long without silverware.

And today's draw in Monaco will confirm Arsenal's place among Europe's top-seeded high-fliers.

Qualification for the league stages will be worth £20million, more than enough to satisfy the bean-counters.

Wenger is above such financial concerns. For him, the Champions League is more a matter of pride and prestige.

What a pity his sense of moral superiority has been tainted by Eduardo's chicanery.

Arsenal 4 Portsmouth 1
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

It would be brave just now to bet on Portsmouth to win any football match but the fixture computer had seemed particularly cruel to present them with a trip to the Emirates this weekend.

A clash between the Premier League’s form team and crisis club duly produced the obvious outcome, with Arsenal following up last week’s 6-1 drubbing of Everton with an equally emphatic 4-1 victory here.

Ten goals in two games is some start. Portsmouth’s winless streak against Arsenal spans more than 50 years and, although Younes Kaboul did at least score their first away league goal since March, a brace from Abou Diaby and further goals from William Gallas and Aaron Ramsey ensured that sequence was never seriously threatened.

With matches against Celtic and Manchester United to come over the next seven days, Arsene Wenger presumably had the team’s schedule in mind when he made four outfield changes from the side that had begun the season so well against Everton.

Nicklas Bendtner, Gael Clichy, Alex Song and Bacary Sagna were among the substitutes as Emmanuel Eboue, Diaby, Kieran Gibbs and Eduardo all started.

It also meant a subtle shift in Arsenal’s fluid system, with Denilson operating as the holding midfielder and Diaby given licence to join Cesc Fabregas in support of a three-pronged attack of Andrei Arshavin, Robin van Persie and Eduardo.

Although Portsmouth had demonstrated a certain defensive resilience in their 1-0 defeats against Fulham and Birmingham, they experienced immediate difficulties in picking up Diaby’s bursts forward.

This was evident twice in the space of just five devastating first-half minutes.

First Fabregas found Eduardo on the left, whose clever run and cut-back was drilled emphatically into the top corner and then, moments later, the Arsenal captain split Portsmouth’s defence down the right and Eboue teed up Diaby for the simplest of finishes.

Not even 25 minutes had elapsed but David James, who was making his 550th top-flight appearance, already knew it would be a long and busy afternoon under the watchful eyes of England manager Fabio Capello.

He did make three excellent saves to deny Van Persie after 31, 40 and 43 minutes, but there was an inevitability about more goals. Unexpectedly, though, one came at the Arsenal end when Kaboul out-jumped Manuel Almunia to head into an empty goal.

Arsenal were placed under further pressure at the beginning of the second-half, with William Gallas appearing fortunate to escape punishment for a challenge on John Utaka. Gallas then enjoyed further good luck when he scored off his face from a corner to re-establish Arsenal’s two-goal advantage.

The victory was sealed when Ramsey, on as a half-time substitute for Fabregas, collected Van Persie’s accurate pass and shot beyond James.

A miserable afternoon for Portsmouth was further compounded when James, who has recently undergone knee surgery, limped from the pitch with 15 minutes remaining.

Van Persie - We want to fight for each other

Robin van Persie believes the togetherness in the Arsenal squad could propel them to success this season.

The Dutchman has played a leading role in the Club's flying start to the campaign, spear-heading a new three-pronged strike force at Everton in the Premier League and Celtic in Europe.

Arsène Wenger's side have scored eight times already and, although Van Persie has not netted himself, he has been part of a consummate collective effort.

Arsenal pressed their opponents all over the pitch at Goodison Park and Parkhead, and it's that camaraderie and willingness to work for each other which convinces the Dutchman that Arsenal are heading in the right direction.

"The season is still young but we have played two important games," Van Persie told Arsenal.com after Tuesday night’s Champions League win.

"I think we showed in both that we really want to fight for each other and if we can produce that every three or four days, we can make a big step forward. Hopefully then we can have a great season.

"Maybe being written off [in the media] brings the players a little closer together but we will see what happens," he added. "I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to make the 'enemy' cleverer than they are!

“But if you look at the first two games, we played well. Our targets are as high as last year and if we can stick together and stay together and work hard for each other, we can make it a good season."

Celtic 0-2 Arsenal
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

LONDON — A fluke by William Gallas and an own goal by Gary Caldwell gave Arsenal a healthy 2-0 victory at Celtic and one foot in the lucrative Champions League group stage on Tuesday.

Gallas accidentally deflected home a 30-yard free kick by Cesc Fabregas in the 43rd minute at Celtic Park and Caldwell turned a cross from Arsenal fullback Gael Clichy past his own goalkeeper in the 71st in the first leg of the playoff round.

"Despite having control of the game we scored two lucky goals," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. "But we had plenty of opportunities."

The teams meet again at Arsenal next week and Celtic will hope to repeat what it achieved in the previous round. Celtic beat Dynamo Moscow after losing the first leg at home.

"Until the first goal I thought we had done extremely well to deny Arsenal opportunities," said Celtic manager Tony Mowbray. "Maybe if we score first at Arsenal it could make them a bit nervous so let's wait and see."

Everton 1-6 Arsenal
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

ARSENE WENGER'S Gunners stuck two fingers up to their critics with a six-goal demolition of Everton.

Arsenal boss Wenger has taken stick for offloading Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure, while restricting his summer spending to only Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Many experts believe the Londoners will be the club to lose their spot in the Big Four.

But there may have to be a rethink in some quarters after a devastating display tore apart David Moyes' supposedly solid side.

New boy Thomas Vermaelen doubled Denilson's opener before William Gallas made it three before the break.

Cesc Fabregas netted a second-half double before Eduardo scored a sixth two minutes from time.

Louis Saha grabbed an injury-time consolation for the home side but there were hardly any Blue shirts left in the ground to see it.

Everton's wantaway defender Joleon Lescott was given a surprisingly warm reception by the home fans.

But Lescott and his defensive partners were soon rocking as Arsenal quickly got into their stride.

Nicklas Bendtner shot just over and Robin van Persie had an effort deflected by Lescott.

And the breakthrough came after 26 minutes thanks to a flowing Gunners move.

Bendtner showed superb control to chest down a long ball and wriggle away from two defenders before finding Cesc Fabregas.

The Barcelona target quickly shifted the ball on and Denilson was on hand to swerve the ball past Tim Howard from 25 yards.

Denilson quickly made his mark at the other end as well as he cleared off the line from Marouane Fellaini.

And the visitors killed off the home side with two goals in four minutes just before the break.

First, Thomas Vermaelen found himself unmarked to head home Van Persie's free-kick.

And William Gallas also made the most of slack marking to glance in Fabregas' set-piece.

Everton were grateful for the half-time whistle to compose themselves and give David Moyes time to come up with Plan B, or C for that matter.

But any hope the Toffees had of clawing their way back into the game were shattered three minutes into the second half when the home side lost possession.

Van Persie sent Fabregas through and he stroked home to make it four.

More desperate Everton defending then allowed Fabregas to collect Manuel Almunia's throw out from goal.

The Spaniard turned with no one within 20 yards of him and ran towards the Everton goal. Still there was no pressure on the ball and Fabregas simply moved himself across the 18-yard box before drilling past Howard into the far corner.

Eduardo found the net from close range on 88 minutes before Saha replied in injury-time.

Everton: Howard, Hibbert (Gosling 58), Yobo, Lescott, Baines, Osman (Saha 58), Neville, Cahill, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jo (Rodwell 58).
Subs not used: Nash, Vaughan, Duffy, Baxter. Goals: Saha 90.

Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Clichy, Fabregas (Ramsey 72), Song Billong, Denilson, Bendtner (Eboue 63), van Persie (Eduardo 72), Arshavin.
Subs not used: Mannone, Silvestre, Gibbs, Merida. Goals: Denilson 26, Vermaelen 37, Gallas 41, Fabregas 48, 69, Eduardo 88.

Van Persie wary of Hoops test

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie is anticipating a 'difficult' UEFA Champions League clash against SPL club Celtic.

Van Persie is currently on international duty with Holland ahead of their friendly versus England, but is aware of the test that awaits Arsenal next Tuesday.

The Gunners have been drawn against Tony Mowbray's Celtic in the Champions League play-off round.

Van Persie is ready for a fierce battle versus the Hoops, who could involve the striker's Dutch compatriot Glenn Loovens.

He said in the Daily Record: "Let's just say there have been a few text messages (with Glenn Loovens) flying back and forward.

Tough
"We've been teasing each other. We were in contact after the draw was made and it's going to be difficult.

"We played against each other in the FA Cup when Glenn was at Cardiff City and thankfully I won on that occasion.

"But talk of the Champions League qualifier is for after international duty. Friendly games are important for us and we play England.

"Almost all the players in both squads are with big teams so it's going to be a very interesting game.

"I don't think there will be many surprises as we are all very familiar with each other and our qualities but it should be an interesting spectacle."

Robin van Persie Hails Gentlemanly Patrick Vieira

The technically-gifted Gunner was speaking at a charity do...

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie has lauded the gentlemanly nature of the club's former talismanic captain Patrick Vieira, famed for his imposing on-pitch demeanour and infamous on-field tussles with ex-Manchester United stalwart Roy Keane.

There have been suggestions in the press, first aired by Ian Wright on Radio 5 Live, that Vieira could return to Arsenal, and Van Persie, who was speaking at the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity launch (the club's charity for the season), commented on the inspiration he drew from the Frenchman.

"I played with him for one year and he was fantastic," Van Persie said. "He is a natural leader and he was really helpful to me.

"If we go back to my first start in the Premier League, I was very nervous before the game and he came up and asked me how I was.

"He told me to just play how I train and that he will always be there to help me.

"He’s always been a gentleman and a fantastic player," he concluded.

Arsenal 3 Rangers 0

JACK WILSHERE'S double inspired Arsenal's second win in two days to lift the Gunners' gloom.

The midfielder, just 17, came off the bench to seal victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

He was rewarded with 90 minutes against Rangers in today's Emirates Cup final.

Wilshere bagged the opener after just two minutes with Eduardo grabbing the second soon after.

And he completed the rout with Arsenal's third after the break.

Having lost Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure to Manchester City over past fortnight, critics have hit out at Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

His lack of activity in this summer's transfer market has led some to believe their grip on a top four spot could slip to City this season.

But in Wilshere they have a little ray of light.
The tiny youngster showed he can be just the tonic for doubting Arsenal supporters by blasting in the first.

Fellow whizkid Fran Merida then played in Croatian striker Eduardo to double the lead as the Gunners cruised ahead.

Wilshere was the star of the show though and he almost nabbed another before the break when he beat three players but his majestic chip was tipped over.

He continued to impress after the break, wriggling his way through the Rangers defence only to shoot wide.

Steven Naismith fluffed a glorious chance to pull one back before Wilshere struck again.

Sub Aaron Ramsey's inch-perfect pass was stroked home by the on-rushing England youth international.

Arsenal 2-1 Atletico
I've added the pictures to the gallery!! you can see them HERE!!

ANDREY ARSHAVIN scored two late goals in an astonishing finish at The Emirates.

Midfield ace Arshavin thought he'd bagged the winner when he scored a first on 85 minutes.

But the Gunners defence were caught napping, allowing German Pachero to sneak through and grab a dramatic leveller.
Incredibly, Arshavin went down the other end and scored AGAIN - and this time, the Spanish side had no answer.

And, even after a successful start to his Prem career, boss Arsene Wenger warned that the two-goal hero has plenty more his locker.

He said: "The difference is now he knows how English football works.

"He knows as well he is part of the team from the start, and the team knows how important and how big an impact he can have on the results.

"Arshavin has what you cannot give to a player - he understands when there is an opportunity in the final third, and is certainly dangerous."

Tomas Rosicky had almost made a dream return to top level action - but he saw his early strike chalked off.

Rosicky has watched the Gunners from the sidelines for 18 months after a cruel knee injury. And he was livid when the ref called back his strike in the game's opening exchanges.

At the other end, Maxi Rodriguez troubled the Arsenal back line with a series of probing runs.

Man-of-the-match Jack Wilshire had a mammoth game for the Gunners - threatening to break through with a series a classy runs.

But neither side could break the deadlock until Arshavin's magical first.

Cecs Fabregas made a winding run through the box before crossing to the Russian sub. He deftly flicked it home - but a minute later, Atletico were level.

Amazingly, Arshavin then poached a second. He latched on to a long ball before miraculously angling home from the byline.

Van Marwijk names Dutch squad

Holland coach Bert van Marwiijk has named a 25-man squad for the friendly against England on 12th August.

Veteran goalkeeper Henk Timmer has not been named in the provisional line-up for the match to be played at the Amsterdam Arena.

The 37-year-old, who was stand-in for Maarten Stekelenburg in previous games, failed to secure a club contract with Feyenoord and has subsequently missed out due to lack of match fitness.

Liverpool's Ryan Babel and Arsenal striker Robin van Persie have both been named in the provisional squad, with the final line-up to be announced on 7th August.

Holland provisional squad:
Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax), Piet Velthuizen (Vitesse Arnhem), Michel Vorm (FC Utrecht); John Heitinga (Atletico Madrid), Andre Ooijer (PSV Eindhoven), David Mendes da Silva (AZ Alkmaar), Edson Braafheid (Bayern Munich), Dirk Marcellis (PSV Eindhoven), Joris Mathijsen (Hamburg), Gregory van der Wiel (Ajax); Mark van Bommel (Bayern Munich), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Nigel de Jong (Manchester City), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid), Rafael van der Vaart (Real Madrid), Orlando Engelaar (PSV Eindhoven), Arjen Robben (Real Madrid), Stijn Schaars (AZ Alkmaar), Demy de Zeeuw (Ajax); Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Real Madrid), Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Ibrahim Afellay (PSV Eindhoven), Ryan Babel (Liverpool), Eljero Elia (Hamburg).

Hanover 0 Arsenal 1
I've added the pictures to the gallery!! you can see them HERE!!

CESC FABREGAS stuck early to round off the Gunners' mini-Euro tour with another win.

The skipper's ninth minute goal was enough to see off the challenge of Hanover 96 despite this proving the toughest test for Arsene Wenger's young side so far.

The confirmation of Kolo Toure's departure to Man City didn't throw Arsenal off their stride and they played their usual brand of neat, attractive football.

Robin van Persie was the provider for Fabregas, who latched on to his reverse pass to sidestep the goalkeeper Robert Enke and tuck away a finish.

Andrey Arshavin could have doubled the advantage but was thwarted by Enke, and Van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner also came close as the visitors controlled proceedings throughout.

Wenger was literally given an armchair chair ride - from a real pitch-side armchair - to watch the action from in Hanover's impressive AMD Arena.

Arsenal are now looking to regain the Emirates Cup this weekend.

Van Persie - New striker will strengthen team

Robin van Persie would welcome another striker at Arsenal to replace Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Togolese forward left for Manchester City just over a fortnight ago and Arsène Wenger has yet to decide if he’ll go into the transfer market to bolster his front line.

Likewise, Van Persie believes that his manager has plenty of firepower already at Emirates Stadium but the 25-year-old is open-minded about a new acquisition.

“It depends how the boss wants to play – with one or two strikers up front,” said the Dutchman. “But myself, Eduardo, Nicklas and Carlos Vela can all play the main role up front. So there are at least four options.

“However if you ask me I am not against a new player as well because it would strengthen our squad.”

IF every game in Europe this season goes as well as this one, that elusive Champions League trophy might finally make it into Arsene Wenger's grasp.

The Gunners romped to victory in Vienna with a seven-goal rout over the minnows of SC Columbia - kick-started when they fell behind to a freak goal early in the first half.

Nicklas Bendtner equalised within a minute and - along with Robin van Persie and Aaron Ramsey - went on to net a double.

Van Persie is the Player of the Season

TIP!! ITS ROBINVPERSIE WEEK ON ARSENAL.COM, YOU CAN SEND IN A SONG ABOUT ROBIN!! SO TAKE A LOOK ON ARSENAL.COM

The Dutchman was a major contributor to the Club's campaign with 20 goals but just as satisfying were the 44 games he played in an injury-free season.

Here, Arsenal.com editor Richard Clarke reflects on Van Persie's progress.

“Really?” exclaimed Robin van Persie with more than a hint of disbelief.

“Ah fantastic,” he added having got confirmation. “That is the biggest honour I always think.”

The striker had just been told he was Arsenal.com’s Player of the Season with a whopping 35.3 per cent of the vote. It was double delight for the Dutchman given where we were and what we were doing. The venue was a seafront room at the famous Carlton Hotel in Cannes. Van Persie had interrupted his holiday to not only sign a new contract but tell the world about it too.

So he had started the day in a good mood. Getting the fans’ approval simply validated the decision he had just made to commit the best years of his career to Arsenal.

There appeared to be no doubts in Van Persie’s mind in the interview that followed. He seemed determined and dogmatic about the brightness of the Club’s future.

Yet just over a year earlier, the player himself had question marks hanging over him. Injury had curtailed two admittedly eye-catching campaigns. Talent was never the issue, toughness certainly was. Given that Emmanuel Adebayor had just completed a 30-goal season and Eduardo looked the part before the horrors of St Andrews, Van Persie might have been pushed to get in the starting XI when everyone was fit.

Simply staying healthy throughout the 2008/09 season would have been a step forward but his contribution in that time would be special. The first real sign were those two second-half goals in the comeback at Chelsea in November. That was closely followed by an outstanding strike against Liverpool. Running at full speed, he chested down a lofted Samir Nasri through-ball on the edge of the area, turned his marker and lashed a shot past Pepe Reina. It was one fluid movement and typical of his cast-iron technique.

It was much more of a Bergkamp goal than an Henry one. And like his compatriot, Van Persie was as happy creating goals as scoring them. He contributed to all of Arsenal’s eight strikes in January – three as scorer and five as ‘assister’. He made all three at Hull City and lashed home a last-second leveller at Everton.

Unsurprisingly, he was Player of the Month but registering a staggering 88.5 per cent was a mark of his importance to a team that was now fighting with their backs to the wall. Remember in January, Aston Villa were still looking solid in fourth place. Arsenal had been clinging to their coat-tails and hindsight portrays this month as the one when Arsène Wenger’s side started to reel them in.

Perhaps Van Persie was just responding to responsibility. Arsène Wenger had made him captain for the first time for the FA Cup Third Round tie with Plymouth on January 3. He would score twice in a comfortable win. He also became the regular penalty-taker in the second half of the campaign.

Holding his nerve to score important spot-kicks against Roma, Villarreal and Manchester United in the Champions League. During that interview in France, Van Persie told an illuminating story. He recalled that while on international duty last season the Dutch had the usual Young vs Old practice match and, for the first time, he was put in the latter group.

Now Van Persie is 26 the day after Emirates Cup weekend – hardly geriatric. But it does make him an old head in an Arsenal side ran by early twentysomethings and stocked up with teenagers.

Of course while he answered certain questions last season, there will be a whole heap of further issues to address if Van Persie is to live up to his sky-high potential.

But back in that hotel room, the player concluded his interview by stating and re-stating his commitment to winning. “We will lift a trophy,” he said with steely assurance.

Thanks to your support, Robin van Persie will pick up a personal prize at the start of the coming campaign.

OFFICIAL: Robin van Persie Extends Arsenal Stay

The technically-gifted Dutchman has penned a new long-term contract

Arsenal and Arsene Wenger have continued the club's summer policy of tying down the Gunners' promising youth and crucial first-teamers by offering Robin van Persie a four-year deal that has today been declared complete.

Van Persie, a left-footed creative forward by nature, enjoyed his most injury-free Premier League campaign last term. In all competitions, he scored 20 times and also accrued 15 assists. One of his most memorable performances was scoring a deuce against London rivals Chelsea in November.

Regarding the deal, manager Arsene Wenger commented on how the 25-year-old's best years are still ahead of him, and that he will continue to improve. He told the club's official website, “It’s fantastic news that Robin van Persie has committed his long term future to Arsenal, we’re all delighted.

“Robin is a hugely gifted player and has the talent and goal scoring ability to win matches at the very top level. We have already seen many times what Robin is capable of on a football pitch, but at only 25, there is still much more to come from him. Robin has the potential to become a true Arsenal great.”

Van Persie added that it was his love for the club that served as the greatest motivation to commit to the north London outfit. He remarked, “I’m so happy to have signed a new long term contract. I’ve been at the club for five years now and there really is a great feeling here at Arsenal.

“We have a top class manager, a squad full of superb young players, a world class stadium and brilliant supporters. Arsenal Football Club has a very bright future and I want to be part of it. My heart is with Arsenal and I just can’t picture myself in a different shirt. I just can’t see it now because I love this club so much. If you look at the last five years, look at the steps I have made every season, if you look at the support the boss and the whole club gave me, the fans gave me, my team-mates gave me – this is the right decision.”

Arsenal squad returns for pre-season training

The 2009/10 campaign edged a little closer today when the Arsenal squad returned for pre-season training.

New signing Thomas Vermaelen took part in his first training session since his summer move from Ajax and there were plenty of familiar faces on show including Tomas Rosicky, Eduardo, William Gallas, Samir Nasri and Andrey Arshavin.

Philippe Senderos was back after completing his loan spell with Milan. And as ever Arsène Wenger was there to put the players through their paces.

There were some notable absentees from today's session including Theo Walcott and Kieran Gibbs, who reached the European Under-21 Championship Final with England, and Cesc Fabregas, part of Spain's squad at the Confederations Cup in South Africa. They are expected back in action later this month.

Our official club photographer braved a downpour at the training ground to capture these exclusive images. We hope you enjoy them.

Robin Close To Agreeing Contract Extension With Arsenal

The Netherlands international striker could put pen-to-paper on a new deal at the Emirates Stadium at some point this week.

According to a report in the British broadsheet The Daily Telegraph, Robin van Persie is not far away from inking a new contract with Premier League giants Arsenal.

Apparently, there may be announcement that the 25-year-old has signed a new deal at some point this week, as only minor issues are preventing the talks from reaching a conclusion.

It is claimed that the Gunners, who recently completed the signing of Belgium international centre-back Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax for £10 million, have a limited transfer budget of £20m for the close-season.

Manager Arsene Wenger is said to have made ensuring that the Netherlands international's future is sorted out his priority, even if it means the transfer kitty is further reduced as funds for doing so are taken from the budget.

The news that the 6ft striker is ready to commit himself to the north London club will come as a huge relief to the fans and the club, as he has recently been linked with moves to Manchester United and Inter.

Inter Still Mooting Move For Arsenal Star Robin

The Nerazzurri have a back-up plan and his name is Robin van Persie...

When Adriano rescinded his contract with Inter mid-way through last season, one of the first names in the frame to replace him was Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, the player is still on Massimo Moratti's wishlist, but only as a fallback plan as his first choice would seem to be Twente starlet Marko Arnautovic.

The 20-year-old has drawn plenty of comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his young career thus far.

Meanwhile, the Gunners currently value their Dutch star at £20 million, but with just one year left on his deal at the Emirates, it's possible he could leave for a lesser price as his contract negotiations have reportedly stalled.

Van Persie scored 11 goals in 24 appearances this season in the Premier League and is also of interest to English champions Manchester United.

Why Robin Van Persie Isn't Going Anywhere

The tabloids are obviously very bored because they have been linking Robin Van Persie with Man United for the last few days. At the time it may have been a good idea; Van Persie hasn't signed a new contract yet, and Man United need a player to replace the big void (apparently) that Ronaldo has left.

What do we get? "Van Persie going to Man Utd!"

No. This doesn't work. When you think of it with the circumstantial evidence, it may sound sane. However, logistically, theoretically, it would be the dumbest move in history if by some long shot it were to happen.

The tabloids don't seem to realise that Van Persie does in fact still have one year left on his current contract. The new contract that is in the works involves a pay raise and a longer term. Research isn't important anymore, it seems.

Van Persie knows that Arsenal has made him the player he is today. He loves Arsenal and would never leave for a rival club. If at some point he was to leave Arsenal, we can be sure that it's to a club in a different league.

Why is Van Persie stalling? He wants to be sure that the squad is able to compete next season. Van Persie has ambition and wants to win lots of silverware, so he's ironically holding up on putting pen to paper until those signings are made. Arsenal has already made progress with the signing of Thomas Vermaelen, which is being kept under the radar by the Arsenal staff.

If the Vermaelen transfer goes through and another big signing is made, that will give us a chance to challenge for the title, as he will surely sign the extension to his contract.

Noble intentions? Probably, but Van Persie is staying at Arsenal.

Manchester United Interested In Arsenal Star Robin van Persie

The Red Devils are looking to take advantage of the Dutch forward's protracted contract negotiations with the Gunners...

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, according to a report in the British tabloid The Sun.

Apparently, Red Devils manager Alex Ferguson is a big fan of the 25-year-old and is looking to take advantage should contract talks between the Gunners and the player continue to stall.

The 36-time capped Netherlands international's current deal is due to expire next summer.

Although it seems Van Persie is happy with the new four-year deal worth a reported £80,000-a-week, it seems that what is preventing him putting pen-to-paper is the north London-based outfit's plans in the transfer market, as he wants to play for a side capable of winning trophies.

"Financially the offer is fine but that is not everything to me. It's about my ambition and how that can be fulfilled," Van Persie is quoted as saying.

"In the last four years I've won only one prize, the FA Cup, and that is too little. I want more."

It is claimed that Ferguson is hopeful he can persuade the former Feyenoord star that a move to Old Trafford would boost his chances of attaining silverware.

However, it is also thought that Inter head coach Jose Mourinho is monitoring the 6ft 2in forward's situation at the Emirates Stadium.

The worrying news for Arsenal fans is that the signs at present indicate Van Persie would be open to a move away from the club.

"Robin loves it at Arsenal but he is getting to the age when he wants to win things," a Dutch source is quoted as stating.

"He knows that there are clubs interested in him and is waiting to see what happens."

Robin Van Persie Set For Arsenal Contract Talks
The Gunners are hoping to secure the Dutchman's signature on a new deal before he heads off on holiday...

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is reportedly set for contract talks at the club, as the Gunners attempt to secure his long-term future.

The Dutchman’s stay at the Emirates has been the subject of some debate, with both Inter and Barcelona reportedly interested in signing the 25-year-old.

However, the Mail on Sunday claims that Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis will speak with the player’s advisers this week in a bid to seal a deal.

The report claims that Arsenal are willing to offer van Persie a four-year contract, worth £80,000 a week, in a bid to keep him at the club.

The striker has appeared reluctant to sign on and is believed to want assurances that Arsenal will remain competitive, and strengthen their squad this summer, before he commits.

The Dutch striker has been a huge hit at Arsenal since joining back in 2004 from Feyenoord.

The 25-year-old hit 16 goals in 38 games last season as the Gunners finished an inconsistent season, a distant fourth in the Premier League.

Van Persie is expected to head off on holiday shortly, but manager Arsene Wenger is hopeful he will sign a new contract before he packs his suitcase.

    Holland 2-0 Norway
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF YESTERDAYS GAME TO THE GALLERY, CLICK HERE To see them!!

ROTTERDAM, June 10 (Reuters) - Andre Ooijer and Arjen Robben scored to earn the Netherlands a 2-0 home victory over Norway and maintain their perfect record in World Cup qualifying Group Nine on Wednesday.

The Dutch, who booked their place in next year's finals on Saturday, went close to opening the scoring in the first minute and had to wait till the 33rd before Ooijer nodded in a free kick from Rafael van der Vaart.
Norway's only chance came just after halftime but Maarten Stekelenburg saved a shot from Morten Gamst Pedersen and a minute later Robben settled the match with a tight angled shot after good work from Van der Vaart and Robin van Persie.

The Dutch top the group with 21 points from seven matches. Scotland are second with seven from five and Norway stayed bottom with three points.
"When you consider our opponents were battling for their last chance and we only gave away one chance, and kept our concentration until the end, we did very well today," said Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk.

"But our game is still improving. We know that we have sufficient creativity up front to be decisive, but as a team we are getting better when we lose the ball."

Van Persie: “Vermaelen must be a good player”

Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen seems more and more likely to be Arsenal’s first signing of the summer. Striker Robin van Persie believes the player must be good if he was chosen by the club’s scouts.

    The Dutch International said:

Arsenal have been really focused on signing a player that strengthens the defence. He can play across the backline and that is what we need. Our head scout watches players for 30 or 40 games, so Vermaelen must be a good player.

Netherlands Qualify For South Africa 2010
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES TO THE GALLERY!! YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

The Oranje book their place as the first European side to reach the promised land...

The Netherlands are guaranteed a spot at World Cup 2010 after a routine win over Iceland in Reykjavik.

The result was never in any doubt after a quick opener from Nigel de Jong in a match that had little to recommend it after the win was assured, although there was a late consolation for the hosts.

Still, for Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk - still cultivating a 100% win record in competitive matches - it is the points that count above all else.

The hosts came out intending to defend under Olafur Johanneson, but Nigel De Jong's early header from a Rafael van der Vaart cross put paid to that idea.

Mark van Bommel then took advantage of fine teamwork instigated by Arjen Robben and involving Van der Vaart and Dirk Kuyt to double the advantage on the sixteen minute mark.

The Dutch, despite lowering the tempo, enjoyed the bulk of the chances heading into half time and beyond, but neither Robben nor Robin van Persie were able to be clinical in front of goal.

Ryan Babel, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and David Mendes da Silva were brought on as substitutes, but the three did not impress, and in fact the hosts were able to pull one back through Kristjan Orn Sigurdsson after a corner two minutes from time.

The Dutch sit top of Group 9 with 18 points from 18; Iceland are bottom with just four from six games.

    Arsenal 4 Stoke City 1
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

THREE goals inside the first 18 minutes saw Arsenal spank sorry Stoke to finish their season in style.

Cesc Fabregas' shot took a wicked deflection off of James Beattie to put Arsenal ahead after only ten minutes.

And the Gunners doubled their lead six minutes later, when Robin van Persie slotted home from the penalty spot after being tripped by Ryan Shawcross.

Frenchman Abou Diaby made it 3-0 with a bullet header two minutes after that before the visitors pulled a goal back through Ricardo Fuller.

Arsenal's Brazilian midfielder Denilson tripped the hitman inside the box, and he sent debutant goalkeeper Vito Mannone the wrong way from the resulting spot kick.

But Rory Delap handed van Persie his second and Arsenal's fourth on 41 minutes when his back header lacked enough power to get through to the keeper.

Van Persie gratefully accepted the gift, collecting the ball expertly on his chest before swivelling to fire it past Tomas Sorensen

The Gunners - safe in fourth space - had little other than wounded pride left to play for after going out of both the FA Cup and Champions League at the semi-final stage.

But they continued to press forward in search of more goals in the second half.

Walcott was replaced by Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner as the home side continued to attack.

Mannone, though, had to be quick out of his area to clear a long through ball ahead of Fuller.

There was another change for the home side when, on 57 minutes, Emmanuel Eboue replaced Bacary Sagna.

Defender Kolo Toure had stayed up following a free-kick and, from 12 yards out, sent his header over the bar after meeting Arshavin's cross.

Arsenal went close again following more good work by Arshavin, twisting and turning down the right, before Bendtner cut the ball back across goal and van Persie fired just over as he leant in at the far post.

Stoke made a substitution on 64 minutes when Salif Diao was replaced by Danny Pugh.

The Gunners continued to dominate and Eboue flashed a low drive across the face of goal with 25 minutes remaining.

With 22 minutes left, Fuller was replaced by Richard Cresswell.

Diaby's downward header, from Eboue's cross, flew wide as Arsenal maintained the pressure.

But neither side could add to the first-half goal glut as the game drew to a close.

Should Arsenal Give In to Robin Van Persie's Demands?
Robin van Persie finally managed a season were he was not wrapped in bandages, and it has benefited greatly for the Gunners.

The Dutch striker has easily been Arsenal's best attacker and it's proven with the 18 goals he has netted this campaign. Van Persie currently leads Arsenal with goals and assists, so it's no wonder he is getting greedy.

It is reported that Arsenal have failed to come to a contract agreement with the Dutch international. Arsenal allegedly offered van Persie a contract which the striker turned down, demanding more money. Arsenal are yet to offer van Persie a new agreement and rumour has it that the Gunners may look to offload their star man.

With van Persie off contract next season, Arsenal face the fact that they may lose their left-footed striker for zilch. If van Persie and Arsenal fail to come to an agreement, the smartest thing for Arsenal would be to sell their goal-scorer.

Arsenal are set to be looking to sell the 25-year-old for as little as nine million which is useful as Wenger only paid three million for van Persie in 2004 when he was bought from Feyenoord. But if Arsenal are serious about selling their frontman, they should, and could, look for more.

Personally, I think van Persie should accept the original deal proposed by Arsenal because we have witnessed what has happened to players who leave Arsenal. I also think that maybe Arsenal should give in to van Persie's demands, as he is a main force and leader in this youthful Arsenal squad.

There is also the point that if Arsenal do sell van Persie and fellow striker Emmanuel Adebayor follows suit, then Arsenal would see their strike department seriously under strength and lacking experience.

Should Arsenal give in to Robin van Persie's demands, or is he getting greedy?

Inter Chase Arsenal Star Robin Van Persie
The Dutch international may try his luck in Serie A, should he leave the Emirates...

Inter are considering a move for unsettled Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, according to ilsussidiario.net.

With Adriano leaving in mid-season and Julio Cruz and Hernan Crespo set to depart the San Siro this summer, coach Jose Mourinho is searching for reinforcements in attack and Van Persie would seem to fit the bill.

The 25-year-old is reportedly unhappy with the new contract being offered to him by the London outfit and Arsenal could cash in rather than risk losing the player for free in the future.

Van Persie only cost Arsenal €3 million back in 2004, when they purchased him from Feyenoord. The latest reports indicate that he could move for as little as €9 million.

The versatile striker has made 41 appearances this season in all competitions for his club, finding the back of the net 18 times.

Earlier in the day, the Italian press claim that the Nerazzurri have confirmed they are close to signing Genoa hitman Diego Milito. However, that would still leave them with just Milito, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Mario Balotelli up front for next season.

Arsenal Set To Cash In On Robin Van Persie
The Dutchman has still not signed a new deal at the club, leading to reports he may be set for a summer exit...

Arsenal are reportedly contemplating selling striker Robin van Persie this summer, after contract negotiations with the Dutchman broke down.

The News of the World claim that a new four-year deal was offered to the striker six months ago but is still yet to be signed by the player.

The British tabloid reports that the player’s advisers are unhappy with the deal and are also insisting a get-out clause is inserted into the contract.

However, the Gunners are believed to be unwilling to amend the deal, which has led to a stalemate between the parties.

Therefore, as van Persie only has a year left on his remaining contract, the club may be forced to sell him this summer, should he refuse to sign a new deal, rather than lose him for nothing next year.

The report also goes on to state that the club will listen to any offers for the Dutchman and would be willing to accept bids in the region of €9 million.

This would prove a decent return on a player Arsene Wenger signed for just over €3 million from Feyenoord back in 2004.

Yet, with fellow frontman Emmanuel Adebayor also rumoured to be leaving the Emirates at the end of this season, should Van Persie depart, this would leave the Gunners short of numbers in attack.

Manager Wenger has already insisted he only wants to make a couple of signings this summer. However, should his front two both leave, he may well be forced into the transfer market.

ALEX FERGUSON sealed his 11th Premier League title as Manchester United boss — but old foe Arsene Wenger pushed him all the way.

The Arsenal boss sent his men on a mission to wreck the Old Trafford party, with a late assault forcing the legendary Scotsman to sweat to the very end.

But his men held on for a 0-0 draw, earning the point needed to see them crowned champions for the 18th time in their illustrious history.

But the best early chance fell to Robin van Persie, who fluffed his free header after Arshavin had picked him out with a fine far-post cross.

Van Persie then thought he should have had a penalty when he went down under Nemanja Vidic’s challenge but referee Mike Dean thought otherwise.

The Dutchman was also booked for a late tackle before coming close, prodding the ball at Vidic when he could have tested Edwin van der Sar.

Arshavin was booked for a late tackle on Carrick, before a handball decision against Nasri saw Ronaldo fire a freekick wide on the stroke of half-time.

Things got spicy at the start of the second period, with Evra taking exception a tackle from Fabregas that left him hobbling.

Referee Dean then had to step in and cool tempers after a collision between Evra and Van Persie moments later, before Nasri was booked for a foul the Frenchman.

Fletcher put in Tevez for a great chance shortly after, with Lukas Fabianski blocking him out.

The ball fell to Ronaldo, but his follow-up was fired into row Z of the Stretford End.

On 67 minutes Tevez was replaced by best-mate Ji-Sung Park, with the Argentine waving to all four corners of the ground in an apparent farewell.

Wenger introduced Nicolas Bendtner and Theo Walcott for Nasri and Arshavin, but could have seen his side go one behind as Ronaldo was harshly flagged offside as he strode onto Park’s through ball.

But Arsenal then went on a late assault on the United goal, with Fabregas on the edge of the area smashing the post with his angled drive.

Van Persie then had a shot saved by fellow Dutchman Van der Sar as United retreated further into their shell, eventually emerging, arms aloft in triumph, at the final whistle.

Van Persie warns Arsenal won't survive another exodus

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has called on the club to keep hold of their top stars after another season of disappointment at The Emirates. The last three summers have seen a mass exodus of star names as Thierry Henry, Ashley Cole, Robert Pires, Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb all moved on. And now Emmanuel Adebayor, Cesc Fabregas and Gael Clichy have all been linked with moves away from the club after a fourth consecutive season without a trophy.

But van Persie has urged Arsene Wenger and the club's board to keep the current squad together and backed them to improve next season.
"The main thing for me is that we stay together," Van Persie said. "If we lose three or four every year it is hard to get the spirit in. Hopefully we can stay here and have a real go at it. "If we can produce games like we did this year there is room for improvement - if you look at our midfield it is between 20 and 22."

And Wenger backed the Dutchman's calls for unity. "We have a team who is 22-years-old, why should we look for revolution?" Wenger told L'Equipe. "That would be stupid and not responsible.

"I still believe that when you have responsibilities, you have to make decisions and stand up for that. Until now we have not done too badly."
Wenger also insisted the team did not need a complete overhaul despite the disappointment's of this season.

"I do not think that the team need major investments."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger needs all the firepower he can muster as he looks to overturn a 1-0 deficit and to have van Persie available will be an enormous lift.

However, the news is not so encouraging concerning two other players.

Gael Clichy is definitely out, which means another outing for the impressive 19-year-old Kieran Gibbs, while Mikael Silvestre is struggling to overcome a groin problem.

Van Persie to miss first leg of Champions League semi
LONDON, April 23 (Reuters) - Arsenal striker Robin van Persie will miss the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Manchester United with a groin strain. "He is definitely out for Sunday (against Middlesbrough) and for Manchester United," manager Arsene Wenger told the club's website (www.arsenal.com) on Thursday.

Dutchman Van Persie's absence is a big blow to Arsenal who are unable to use in-form Russian Andrei Arshavin who is cup-tied. Better news for Arsenal was that first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is back in training after an ankle injury along with defender Johan Djourou.
Left back Gael Clichy will not recover in time from his back injury to face United next Wednesday at Old Trafford.

"He could be back for the second Manchester United game. He has a scan on Monday. We'll go from there. He has a chance to be back in full training next week," Wenger said.

Central defender William Gallas will not play again this season after injuring knee ligaments.

Liverpool will be without Steven Gerrard for their crucial clash with Arsenal on Tuesday.

The inspirational captain is expected to be out for another seven to 10 days with a groin strain, consequently missing the match at Anfield. Gerrard could also miss out on Liverpool's away game to Hull at the weekend.

Meanwhile Arsenal will be without Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor, who are suffering from groin and hamstring problems respectively.

Although Arsene Wenger will be boosted by the availability of Bacary Sagna who has recovered from a virus and Eduardo, who has been declared fit.

Liverpool are just one point behind Manchester United in the chase for the Premier League crown, but have played a game more. A win for Rafael Benitez's team would heap pressure on Alex Ferguson's men, who play a day later at home to Portsmouth.

LONDON (AP) — Didier Drogba scored with six minutes left to give Chelsea a 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday and a place in the FA Cup final on May 30.

This will be Chelsea's second final in three years. Manchester United and Everton will meet in the second semifinal Sunday.

Both teams had already been hampered by shaky goalkeeping when Arsenal's Lukasz Fabianski rushed out of his area but was beaten to the ball by Drogba. The Ivory Coast striker scored easily into an empty net at Wembley.

Fabianski was playing in place of Manuel Almunia. He had been lucky not to concede a goal from a similar error in the first half and was partly at fault for Florent Malouda's tying goal in the 33rd minute.

"He's a great goalkeeper but it was not his greatest day," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "Inexperience, yes. It was a game when any mistake could be costly."

In the Premier League, Sunderland and Stoke boosted their chances of avoiding relegation with 1-0 wins.

Stoke beat visiting Blackburn through a 75th-minute goal by Liam Lawrence to move nine points clear of the relegation zone, and Djibril Cisse scored just before halftime to give Sunderland victory against Hull.

While Stoke, playing in the top tier for the first season since 1985, looks to be safe from dropping. Sunderland is still in danger despite moving above Blackburn and Hull into 15th place.

Wolverhampton Wanderers became the first club this season to clinch promotion to the Premier League after a 1-0 win over visiting Queens Park Rangers. Charlton was relegated again, this time to League One, following its 2-2 draw with Blackpool.

Arsenal vs Chelsea Semifinal FA cup.
The first semifinal of the FA Cup 2009 promises to be a thrilling affair. After all, we have two teams playing who are both Champions League semifinalists, and could well be Champions League finalists. But their styles couldn't be more different.

Arsenal are a known commodity. They will set about with a multi-pronged attack. Wenger's only question will be who he wants to preserve for the game against Liverpool in mid-week. But this is a clear shot at Silverware, so Adbeyor who is on form, must spearhead the attack and Fabregas will surely play. Nasri, Arshavin, Walcott and Van Persie are all available so at least 2, may be 3 of them will come in. Denielson is likely to retain his place as a ball winning midfielder.

Almunia, Djourou, Gallas, Clichy and Sagna are all injured, as is Kieran Gibbs. Which means Eboue, Toure and Sylvestre at the back pluse one more untried or makeshift left back."There is the option to play Sagna in there if he has recovered," Wenger said on Arsenal TV Online. "The other is to play (Mikael) Silvestre there and put (Alex) Song at the back. There's not many options but we'll deal with the situation no matter what happens."

Its this weakness at the back that Chelsea will look to exploit. Especially with Drogba coming into a purple patch and looking like his most menacing self, he could really bully an inexperienced defensive combo.

Chelsea have no real problems like Arsenal. Their team is largely fit, but Carvalho is out with a hamstring injury.

Given Arsenal's soft centre, Chelsea will look to break down the middle, with Ballack, Lampard and Anelka or Drogba (or both) doing the damage.

Chelea's defence are usually quite strong but they have shipped 7 goals in their last 2 games. Cech has looked anything but comfortable and their weakness against the long ball has been noticed. Alex and Terry are not the fastest of centre hallves, so Arsenal will certainly look to play a few long balls over the heads of the central backs, for the Gunners to run into spaces.

The midfield battle will be intriguing. Fabregas's style isn't an all action one like Gerrards. Its all touch and go for the most part. So there isn't going to be a clear target for Essien. Will that free him up to attack of lessen impact?

Either way it looks like there are plenty of goals in the first FA Cup final game. Hiddink has shown he's the man to put a team out that can enjoy a high-scoring game.

In-form Arsenal too strong for Villarreal
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES OF THE MATCH TO THE GALLERY! YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Lovely video of robin celebrating (Dancing), CLICK HERE!!

(CNN) -- Arsenal continued their impressive run of form with a 3-0 home victory over Villarreal to reach the Champions League semifinals 4-1 on aggregate on Wednesday.

The Gunners, who are unbeaten in the Premier League since last November, will now face rivals Manchester United in the last four after goals from Theo Walcott, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie proved enough to see off their Spanish opponents at the Emirates Stadium.

Walcott opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Cesc Fabregas' flick-on deceived the Villarreal defense and the England winger burst through to superb chip the ball over the head of goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

Villarreal went close in first-half stoppage time when Diego Godin headed over the crossbar, but Arsenal made sure of a semifinal place when, on the hour, Van Persie released Adebayor to net his fourth goal in as many games.

Nine minutes later, the Yellow Submarines were finally sunk when Dutchman Van Persie converted a penalty after a foul on Walcott.

The decision enraged Villarreal to such an extent that Sebastian Eguren was sent off after he was shown a second yellow card for dissent.

With Villarreal down to 10 men, Arsenal took their foot off the gas and were able to conserve energy ahead of their FA Cup semifinal against Chelsea at Wembley this Saturday.

Robin Van Persie ready to sign new Arsenal deal
Robin Van Persie has given Arsenal a huge boost ahead of their four days of destiny by revealing he is ready to sign a new deal at the Emirates.

Van Persie, 25, turned down Arsenal's first £65,000-a-week contract offer and demanded assurances about the club's ambitions after going four years without a trophy.

But he said there is a "big chance" he will stay just as Arsenal begin their two-pronged assault on silverware, having not won anything since the 2005 FA Cup.

The Gunners are favourites to progress from tomorrow's Champions League quarter-final with Villarreal and then face Chelsea in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final showdown.

Arsene Wenger has insisted contract negotiations are postponed until the end of the season to allow players to focus on the push for glory.

Van Persie said: "We've had a couple of meetings now in a really positive atmosphere. The main thing in these things is whether you both have the intention to 'extend' but the way I see it is that we both have the intention to extend so there's a big chance that I will stay.

    Wigan atletic 1-4 Arsenal
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Arsenal strengthened their grip on a Champions League place as they hit four second-half goals to crush Wigan.

Wigan striker Mido made the breakthrough in the first half to rock Arsenal at the JJB Stadium.

However, he got a helping hand from goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who only helped his effort into the net.

Referee Alan Wiley then sparked controversy in stoppage-time by handing only a yellow card to Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs as he hauled back Antonio Valencia, and Ben Watson's free-kick hit the post.

However, Gunners were level midway through the second half when Theo Walcott fired the ball into the top corner after good work by Andrei Arshavin.

And they took the lead when Cesc Fabregas burst down the left to set up substitute Silvestre to side-foot home from the six-yard line.

Arsenal then took complete control and Arshavin made it 3-1 before Alex Song darted through Wigan's demoralised defence to slot home the fourth.

Robin came in the 63 minute in the field, he got a yellow card.

Van Persie to miss Villarreal trip
LONDON (AFP) — Robin van Persie has been ruled out of Arsenal's Champions League quarter-final first leg away to Villarreal, a statement on the London club's website said here Monday.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger had given the Dutch striker a "fifty-fifty" chance of playing in Tuesday's match in Spain but van Persie won't be a member of the 18-man squad after failing to recover in time from a groin injury.

However, wingers Theo Walcott (knee) and Samir Nasri ('flu) have both been given the all-clear.

But Eduardo and Tomas Rosicky (both groin) and Abou Diaby (thigh) are unavailable for Tuesday's match.

Barcelona line up £15m move for Robin van Persie
BARCELONA are lining up a£ 15million move for Robin van Persie.

The Arsenal hitman is stalling on a new three-year deal and the Spanish giants are keen to sign the Dutchman, who is frustrated at winning only an FA Cup since joining in 2004.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to double Van Persie's wage to£ 70, 000 a week but Barca feel they can lure him in the summer.

Van Persie could replace former Gunner Thierry Henry, who is wanted by mega-rich Manchester City.

Wenger wants to keep Van Persie but is eyeing another striker with Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain in the frame.

Wenger: No progress on van Persie contract
By Jonathan Chong on Saturday, April 4, 2009

Manager Arsène Wenger has admitted that there has been no progress made on the contract negotiations with striker Robin van Persie.

Earlier in the week, the Dutch international revealed that he was only willing to sign a contract extension if the club was willing to match his ambitions.

Wenger said: "I think when he signs a contract we will tell you, don't worry.

"There is no news on whether he is close [to signing] or not.

"Either you sign or you do not sign, the rest is no news, it's just speculation."

Fabregas, Adebayor & Walcott To Return For Arsenal
The trio of stars are set to make their return to the first team when the Gunners face Manchester City on Saturday, but six of their team-mates have been sidelined.

There is an old saying that you have to take one step back in order to take two steps forward, but for Arsenal it's a case of three players back but six step forward to the treatment room. A trio of Gunners have been declared fit to feature against Mark Hughes' Manchester City, only for half a dozen to remain sidelined.

Influential playmaking skipper Cesc Fabregas is to be included in the squad for Saturday's fixture while Emmanuel Adebayor is back following his problematic hamstring injury and Theo Walcott has fully recovered from his shoulder and knee problems.

However, Robin van Persie, Eduardo da Silva, Abou Diaby, Samir Nasri and Carlos Vela will all miss out due to a whole variety of injuries and ailments. Nicklas Bendtner could face a late fitness test to assess his availability regarding knee trouble, but the likelihood is that he will be included.

"We have lost Robin van Persie with a groin problem," Arsene Wenger told the club's official website. "We have also lost Eduardo through a groin problem he picked up after 80 minutes in the Croatian game.

"We lose as well Abou Diaby with a thigh problem that he picked up in France training. We might lose Nasri because he came back with flu and could not practice today.

"So three players are out and there is a question mark over Nasri. But Fabregas, Adebayor and Walcott are all back and available in the squad.

"Nicklas texted us last night and said everything was alright with him. But Carlo Vela, I count out because he lands on Friday morning at 10.30. However, if needed he can be in the squad."

Arsenal host Manchester City at 15:00 BST on Saturday afternoon.

    Contract talk
Robin van Persie has revealed he wants to see proof Arsenal have real ambition before committing his future to the club.

The Dutch forward, who is out of Wednesday night's World Cup qualifier against Macedonia with a groin problem, said he is happy with the terms on offer but is not yet sure if Arsenal is the right club for him in the long term.

The 25-year-old's contract expires in the summer of 2010 and should he fail to sign a new deal before the end of August the Gunners could be forced to cash in or risk losing him for nothing.

It is believed that Van Persie, who is the club's top Premier League scorer with nine goals, has been offered a three-year contract on £80,000-a-week.

"I'm still in negotiations with Arsenal, and it's going well - in a very positive atmosphere," said Van Persie. "There are further meetings planned.

"Financially Arsenal's last offer is fine, but that isn't everything for me. It's about my ambitions and how they can be fulfilled. The club and I want the same, and it's our intention to achieve that. We have all the other factors in place - fantastic stadium, dedicated support and money in the bank.

"Now it's about making that final push. In the last four years, I've only won one prize, the FA Cup - and that is too little. I want to push through to achieve more.

"That is something I feel in my mind and my body. It's difficult to explain, but I certainly feel I can play an important role in taking Arsenal to a higher level."

In an interview with this month's Champions magazine, Van Persie also said he had matured as a player and as a person: "I believe the wild days are behind you when you reach 25.

"From this age on, you should be reaping the rewards of what you've learned. After seven years in professional football, I now have what I need to go further.

"I've heard and seen enough - it's as if I've crossed a barrier. I see players between 25 and 30 having their best years.

"In a certain sense, it feels like a voyage of discovery - and I feel I'm where I want to be as a footballer. This also applies to physical development. Now, I can play out matches a lot easier."

Van Persie Miss Holland's Clash With Macedonia
The Netherlands have confirmed that Arsenal striker Robin van Persie will miss their World Cup qualifier with Macedonia on Wednesday night with a groin injury.

The forward has suffered something of an interrupted season due to injury, and this fresh problem with greatly perturb Arsenal gaffer Arsene Wenger, especially as van Persie looked to be returning to form at a crucial stage of the season, and was on target in his country's comfortable 3-0 win over Scotland in Amsterdam on Saturday.

He was replaced during that fixture with Real Madrid's Wesley Sneijder, who will in all likelihood step up into the second-striker role.

The win against George Burley's men made the Dutch lead at the top of Group 9 looked pretty impregnable, with the Oranje having collected maximum points from their opening four fixtures.

Van Persie doubtful for Macedonia clash
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Holland may head into their World Cup qualifier against Macedonia on Wednesday without Robin van Persie after the Arsenal forward missed training on Monday due to a groin problem.

The 25-year-old sustained the injury in Saturday's 3-0 win against Scotland in Amsterdam. which put Holland eight points clear at the top of Group Nine.

Van Persie gave the Oranje a two goal advantage with a strike on the stroke of half-time but limped off the pitch fifteen minutes after the break.

The Dutchman is unlikely to be fit for the midweek clash with Macedonia in Amsterdam and will probably be replaced by Real Madrid midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who also took his place against Scotland.

Real winger Arjen Robben missed Monday's training session too, but is expected to be fit.

    Robin van Persie admits
I'VE ADDED THE PICTURES TO THE GALLERY, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

ROBIN VAN PERSIE last night admitted Scotland were robbed of a goal in Amsterdam.

Gary Caldwell bulleted the ball home with a header in the second half when Holland were leading 2-0.

It was chopped off by ref Laurent Duhamel who insisted Gary Teale impeded keeper Maarten Stekelenburg but van Persie insisted he saw nothing wrong with it.

He said: "The goal Scotland scored was good - I didn't see anything unusual when I watched the replay on television."

The Arsenal star also agreed with Scotland boss George Burley that keeper Allan McGregor had been blocked when van Persie scored the second goal.

His rare header effectively crushed Scotland's hopes and McGregor was blasted for failing to come off his line. But van Persie said: "Klaas Jan Huntelaar made a good block. There were still two players in front of me and one other there but I was able to make it."

He also said he was amazed the Scots were so poor at defending aerial attacks.

He said: "I've been a bit unlucky with headers lately for Arsenal, hitting the woodwork or having efforts cleared off the line, so I was really happy to see the one against Scotland go in.

"It's quite funny as Arjen Robben suggested I should take the corner but I felt something in my groin and told him to take it.

"I certainly didn't expected that because I thought they would be dominant in the air but on two occasions on Saturday they weren't.

"It wasn't as easy as it looked. Gregory vander Wiel and the whole defence pushed forward and that made it easier for the forwards. We dominated the game and Scotland never had one clear chance."

Asked if he had been impressed by any of the Scots, van Persie picked out Ross McCormack but insisted the Cardiff man was let down by a lack of support from his more experienced team-mates.

He said: "Scotland's No.10 has a lot of quality but he was alone as the others weren't helping him. He's a talented player.

"McCormack has good touch, he's quick and I liked what I saw of him.

"I have played against him before for Arsenal against Cardiff but I didn't notice him as much then.

"He had a difficult role to play against us but he did well in it even if he was getting a bit frustrated. He will do well for Scotland."

The Scots couldn't cope with the movement and intelligence of van Persie, Arjen Robben, and Huntelaar and when the second goal went in seconds before half-time everyone knew it was all over.

Van Persie said: "It was the killer goal.A 1-0 lead is always good to have but when you get a second so late in the first half it gives you a big boost and deflates the opposition.

"I remember Robbie Keane scoring a goal for Liverpool at the end of the first half against Arsenal this season.

"It was the equaliser after I had opened the scoring and it was a big goal because it changed that game.

"Our second against Scotland was also very important but I always felt we were in control and that our movement and pace would cause problems.

"I knew Scotland would be aggressive at the start because that's something all British teams are and you did have a chance with Kenny Miller.

"But overall I thought we defended outstandingly well and that was the basis we worked from.

"The result was good and it was a deserved victory for Holland."

Even so, van Persie added a note of consolation when he said: "I know Scotland had some injuries and that is a pity. It wasn't fair in some ways because you always like to compete against the best players.

"But now for you it is Iceland and that is a big game in terms of qualifying for the World Cup."

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Robin van Persie and Dirk Kuyt scored to help the Netherlands take a major step toward qualifying for the 2010 World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Scotland on Saturday night.

Huntelaar headed in Mark van Bommel's cross from 6 yards in the 30th minute, and van Persie headed in Arjen Robben's corner kick in first-half stoppage time. Kuyt converted a penalty kick in the 77th after Christophe Berra fouled Huntelaar in the penalty area.

The Netherlands (4-0) leads Europe Group Nine with 12 points, followed by Scotland and Iceland (1-2-1) with four each. The Dutch host Macedonia on Wednesday, and the Scots host Iceland.

Van Persie: Scotland will be dangerous
I'VE ADDED SOME NEW TRAININGSPICTURES OF TODAY TO THE GALLERY!! YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Robin van Persie has compared Saturday's World Cup qualifier to Arsenal, the sophisticates of the Barclays Premier League, facing a rabid and relegation-threatened Stoke City or Hull.

Encouragingly for Scotland, both teams have beaten Arsene Wenger's aristocrats this season. A Daniel Cousin goal on his debut ensured a 2-1 win for Phil Brown's side at the Emirates Stadium in September, while Tony Pulis' side won 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium last November.

Van Persie warned his team-mates to guard against complacency as the Oranje stand on the brink of an uncommonly quick and hassle-free qualification for the World Cup in South Africa next year.

He also acknowledged the scope for a similar upset to the ones he has experienced in the Premier League this season.

"I expect the style of game to be like Arsenal against Stoke City or Hull," he said.

"Arsenal are always expected to win these games but those teams are fighting for their lives and that makes them dangerous, as we have discovered this season.

"I expect Scotland to be compact and difficult to beat. We know if we win our two games we are through but we cannot expect it just to happen."

Van Persie was excused from service for another giantkilling. Burnley claimed Arsenal as one of their many illustrious victims during their Carling Cup crusade, Owen Coyle's team eventually losing to Tottenham Hotspur in extra time in the semi-final, second leg. It acts as another cautionary tale to the traditionally conceited Dutch.

"I didn't play against Burnley but they did very well," he said. "It shows what can happen if you're not focused, but a World Cup qualifier is completely different. Scotland are of a lot higher quality than Burnley."

Van Persie has spoken to Glenn Loovens, his former Feyenoord team-mate, for information on Celtic's influential Scots. That background check has been rendered obsolete as Stephen McManus joined Paul Hartley on the injury list, leaving Gary Caldwell and Scott Brown as the champions' representatives.

"The defence has been strong for Celtic and the national team. Scotland have injuries but they still have very good players," he said.

Having been told of Brown's combative style, Van Persie also paid a glowing tribute to Darren Fletcher. The midfielder has flourished as a first-team regular at Old Trafford this season, earning him maximum respect in the Dutch camp.

"Darren Fletcher has played in all of the big games for Manchester United this season and that says enough about him if Sir Alex Ferguson trusts him so much," he said.

Win, lose or draw inside the Amsterdam ArenA, Van Persie predicted Scotland to finish as best of the rest in Group 9. "They are the next best team in the group," he said.

If only it were that simple.

Robin van Persie: Arsenal is 'Unbeatable'

The Dutch forward believes the Gunners could yet triumph in the FA Cup and Champions League after getting back to their best...

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie believes that the team are finally beginning to peak and show their true potential.

The Gunners are fourth in the Premier League table, ten points behind leaders Manchester United.

However, the north London outfit have put together a 16-match unbeaten run in the league and, although it looks unlikely they will lift the Premier League trophy this year, the Dutch international is confident of success in the FA Cup and Champions League.

"I feel we are unbeatable,” Van Persie is quoted as saying in The Sun. “I go out there thinking we can win every game.

"Even when Newcastle [United] drew level on Saturday, I never thought, ‘Oh no, we are not going to win.’ I looked at the time and saw we had 30 minutes left and I was convinced we would win.

"I still look back at the dropped points from earlier in the season and it hurts. We are ten points behind United and six behind Chelsea because we lost some silly points against teams we should have beaten.

"We are not doing those silly things any more. We are coming into great form at the right time and who knows what will happen in the FA Cup and Champions League?"

    Robin commits to Gunners
If you want to see the video CLICK HERE

Robin van Persie insists he is not about to walk out on The Gunners and intends to honour his current contract with the club.

Various press reports had suggested the Holland international was disatisfied with his side’s progress on the pitch and was considering a move away from Emirates Stadium.

But in an exclusive interview with Setanta Sports, the forward admitted he was determined to see The Gunners challenging for trophies and would ‘respect’ his contract.

“My aim is not to fight for fourth place,” he told Setanta Sports. “This is what we are involved in now and I accept that. But it is not my aim just to qualify for the Champions League. I want to win the Champions League and I believe we can.

“It is not just that I want to play in the FA Cup, I want to win it and that is what I have always said.

“I am not a guy who gives up easily. I have a contract until 2011 and I will respect that and, about my future, I can’t say much more.”

Arsene Wenger’s side have been hit by injuries to key players over the course of the season, but several of The Gunners absentees are now closing in on returns.

Van Persie recognizes that the January capture of Andrey Arshavin provides a timely boost, but it is the return of club captain Cesc Fabregas that really has him excited.

“The signing of Arshavin is a really good one, while we also have Theo [Walcott] coming back.

“But Cesc is also close to a return. He is really important for us because he controls the game, slowing it down and speeding it up.”

Van Persie was initially labeled a troublemaker as he set out on his career, but the striker feels he has developed both on and off the pitch.

“Everyone develops. I develop, you develop, everyone makes steps in their life, and that’s what I did,” he added.

"I wasn’t really bothered about what people were saying about me when I was 18 and I am still not really bothered.

“I do respect people’s opinions but some opinions about my discipline in the past were from people who didn’t really have a clue about what was going on. I am who I am and I am quite happy with that.”

The title? Why not, says RVP
Robin van Persie keeps the faith and has refused to rule Arsenal out of the Premier League title race.

The Dutch striker, who delivered two assists during the spectacular 3-1 win over Newcastle, live on Setanta Sports, aims high and understands that his side are back in great form.

When asked whether The Gunners were aiming higher, Van Persie expressed a huge belief and showed a positive attitude.

"I think in this world you have to think positive, so why not?” Van Persie told Setanta Sports about Arsenal's chances of catching Manchester United.

"I think we're close to our best. We've been building it up and playing better and better each game."

"It tells us that we can bounce back,” he said after the game. “We showed it against Hull last week, we showed it again today [Saturday].

"I think this team has a lot of character and it's up to us to show it until the end of the season because we can win lots of things this year."

Arsenal remain fourth, three points above Aston Villa, and Van Persie believes that The Gunners are in the driving seat in the quest for Champions League qualification.

He said: "It's a big advantage because Villa play Liverpool on Sunday and next week Man United and we are three up so the whole situation has changed.

"It's a good thing because Villa are not used to these kinds of situations. We are so it's up to us to stay calm and do what we're doing."

    Van Persie: Let's stay positive
Striker Robin van Persie has asked his team mates to remain positive and keep on playing their best.

The Gunners beat Newcastle United to strengthen their position in fourth spot, and are now 10 points behind leaders Manchester United with 8 games left to play.

When Setanta Sports asked if there was a possibility of the North London club making a late charge for the title, van Persie said: "I think in this world you have to think positive, so why not?

"I think we're close to our best. We've been building it up and playing better and better each game.

"It tells us that we can bounce back. We showed it against Hull City last week, we showed it again today [Saturday].

"I think this team has a lot of character and it's up to us to show it until the end of the season because we can win lots of things this year.

"It's a big advantage because Villa play Liverpool on Sunday and next week Manchester United and we are three up so the whole situation has changed.

"It's a good thing because Villa are not used to these kinds of situations. We are so it's up to us to stay calm and do what we're doing."

Van Persie's Our Ronaldo - Clichy
Arsenal full-back Gael Clichy is optimistic ahead of the new season, noting that if Robin van Persie should stay fit, his presence will improve the Gunners' performances...

Van Persie was a key player in the Gunners' blistering start to last season, and though they maintained their strong showings even when he once again was sidelined with injuries, ultimately they floundered and many pointed to his absence as one of the key factors in their late-season failure.

One man who agrees is Gael Clichy, who notably went the whole season without injury and was one of the Arsene Wenger's star players.

Clichy compared van Persie to Manchester United phenomenon Cristiano Ronaldo for his ability to change a game in an instant.

"He was unlucky to be injured last season so it was good to see him play game after game," said the Frenchman. "It was a big blow to lose him and I'm certain that his return is going to be a great bonus for us this season.

"At Arsenal we have lots of players who can make a difference, but Robin is a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, the kind who, even if they aren't playing fantastically, can change things from one free-kick, corner or one pass."

Robin Van Persie linked with inter milan
Robin van Persie, the Arsenal forward, features strongly on new Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho's transfer list, according to reports, doing little to restore Arsenal fans’ confidence that the north London club are capable of retaining senior players with their current wage structure.

Van Persie, currently on international duty with Holland at Euro 2008, spoke out recently in criticism of the club’s current wage set-up, suggesting that the carrot the club offer their players is incapable of rivalling other teams.

The Dutchman’s laments about the club’s wage policy will be a serious cause for concern for the Arsenal board. If it is money that the Dutchman is interested in, Arsenal will have a tough time keeping hold of the player, with Inter apparently able to double his current salary.

Van Persie, who is valued at around £15 million, has stalled talks at the Emirates, demanding that the club further demonstrate their ability to keep star players in situ before he signs a new deal. "Keeping this team together," he says, is of vital importance.

However, Arsenal have already lost Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan this summer, and Alexander Hleb is expected to follow the Frenchman to the continent shortly, with Bayern Munich and Barcelona leading the chase to sign him.

The recent signing of Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff City will do little to lift van Persie's spirits. He is more concerned with ensuring that established players stay at the Emirates than bringing in untested talent.

In this context, Van Persie will be reassured by what looks to have been a successful attempt by Arsene Wenger to keep hold of Emmanuel Adebayor despite AC Milan's expressed interest in the striker. The Tongo international is said to be on the verge of signing a new contract at the Emirates.

Van Persie - We are unbeatable
Robin van Persie is confident Holland will win Euro 2008 because he feels 'unbeatable' within the squad.

The Dutch qualified from this summer's 'Group of Death' as they comprehensively defeated Italy and France to book a quarter-final date, before brushing aside Romania with a much-changed side.

And ahead of a last eight meeting with Russia in Basel on Saturday, Arsenal forward Van Persie has revealed his belief in his international team-mates.

Holland have not won the European Championship since 1988, but Van Persie feels a 20-year wait for glory will come to an end in Austria and Switzerland.

    Dream
"We've sent out a message," Van Persie said in the Daily Mail. "But this is just part of the dream, not the end.

"We have to win three more times to lift the trophy.

"With this squad I really have the feeling that we are unbeatable, though we have to take it step by step.

"That is why I want to be part of the team as it feels like something beautiful is happening."

    Fresh
Van Persie, who spent the majority of last season out injured, scored Holland's second goal in the 2-0 victory over Romania as he started his first game of Euro 2008.

And, despite playing in a slightly withdrawn position when compared to his role at Arsenal, Van Persie is hopeful he is again named in coach Marco van Basten's first XI.

"It doesn't matter to me where I play," added Van Persie. "If the boss believes I can be valuable for the team in another position, I will play there.

"Mentally I am fresh, physically as well. Of course I want to play in the quarter-final but we'll have to see."

Van Persie happy with Holland display
I'VE ADDED THE PHOTO'S OF TODAYS TRAINING, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE

Man of the match Robin van Persie was pleased with how Holland raised their game in the second half to dump Romania out of Euro 2008 and advance to the quarter-finals with a perfect record from the 'Group of Death'.

Van Persie scored his second goal of the competition to clinch a 2-0 win over the Romanians at Bern's Stade de Suisse Wankdorf on Wednesday night after Klaas Jan Huntelaar had opened the scoring.

"It's a nice victory, definitely," said the Arsenal forward. "The first half was very difficult because they had eight men behind the ball but the second half there was a bit more space and we could pass it a little more easily forwards. Overall it was a good team performance."

Coach Marco Van Basten too was thrilled with the former Feyenoord player's display.

"I'm very happy for him," said the AC Milan legend. "He worked hard. He has had a long and difficult time without playing and finally he has now played 90 minutes.

"It was not easy for him at the start but he worked hard and I think after that hard work it was his reward to score a nice goal so in the end everybody was happy."

Holland can now look forward to a quarter-final against either Russia or Spain at Basle's St Jakob-Park on Saturday.

Holland's win allowed world champions Italy - 2-0 winners over France in Zurich - to also advance to the last eight with Les Bleus dumped out along with Romania.

Romania coach Victor Piturca admitted his side had felt the effects of their exertions in holding World Cup finalists France and Italy to creditable draws in their first two games.

"Perhaps we were a little bit tired," he said. "We should have been mentally stronger than the Dutch but we weren't. We took enough risks, at times we had three against three at the back and you simply can't do that against teams like Holland. They are clinical."

    Oranje End Romanian Dream
YOU CAN SEE THE PHOTO'S HERE!!

    Netherlands 2-0 Romania.

Despite making no fewer than nine changes to their side, the Dutch maintained their 100% record with an easy win over a Romanian side that simply was not up to it on such a crucial night. The Tricolorii go home, while the Dutch prepare to meet Russia or Sweden...

The World Champions of Italy might have so nearly been humbled, and France may also have left with their tails between their legs, but the fairytale of Romania's advancement through the 'Group of Death' concluded before the final chapter was written.

For it was the jubilant Dutch that left with all three points in Bern, Marco van Basten's all-changed line-up doing more than enough to sink their opponents on what was a largely uninspiring occasion. With Goals of Klaas-jan Huntelaar and Robin van persie.

Van Basten: Robin made the difference
I've ADDED THE PICTURES OF TODAYS PRESSCONFERENCE, YOU CAN SEE THEM HERE!!

Dutch coach Marco van Basten has praised both Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben for their performances against France, in which the Netherlands won 4-1.

van Persie has missed most of the Gunners' domestic campaign through injury and is therefore fresher compared to his other team mates and will be looking to get some much-needed match practice under his belt.

van Basten said: "We were lucky when we were under pressure but it is very comforting when you can bring on players like Robben and van Persie.

"It was necessary to start stretching the French and their goals made the difference."
